Good morning Maureen, my daughter had the same problem for quite some

time. The school, a public one, gave her a reading program, (sorry I don't

recall the name), she would wear headphones and play a tape of the same book

that she was reading, she would read along with the book out loud along with the

tape at the same time. She could also use this in the classroom as she followed

along in a book the class was reading, she was also hearing through the

headphones. This helped tremendously. Ask your school nurse/counselor/teacher

about it. I will look back through her school records and try to find the name

of the program. is now 19 and this was 10 years ago. I'm sure the

programs are much more advanced now.

18 college student Math & Physics major

Hi everyone!

I was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how to help Andy. He's now 9

and in 3rd grade and is loving it but he's having difficulty with reading

comprehension. He reads well but is having trouble recalling details, finding

the main idea, determining how the characters in the story are feeling, and

making predictions. Any ideas, book or software suggestions? Please?

Thanks,

Maureen, mother to Tyler, 13 and , 9 (MDS)

Thanks for your response, Patty. I just had 's conference with his

teacher and Moderate Special Needs teacher. He will be able to preview stories

on tape before the class starts the story. Also, I just ordered software from

Merit Software which targets the areas in which Andy needs help. Thanks again

for your suggestion - it's always easier, for me anyway, to walk into a meeting

with some ideas!

You are very welcome! On a bragging note: , who is 19-MDS and in

college, is passing all her classes thus far! Next semester though she has

math, her problem subject.

At some point the light goes off and a parent realizes that for our kids PS is most likely no more than over glorified daycare.  Sad but true.Because of your child's disability, " they " think your child can't really learn, so they just pretend to teach, and unfortunately too many parents take what is written on the report card or IEP progress report as the gospel truth and look no further.  Thank God you've realized what is going on, and now your on the right track to d something about it.

We've been using Reading MIlestones and it is working great for us!

summer then public school teaches in 9 months!!! This pisses me off!!!! On

another note....... I purchased the most awesome Reading Comprehension Kit for

pre-school level today @ Lakeshore Learning and it really concerns me how my

daughter just isn't getting it. Math is same way! I'm just so tired of not

getting anywhere in these areas!
