Aislynn was IQ tested by UCLA and she didn't do too well, and every year on the standardized tests she doesn't do well. But she was hyperlexic, (not retaining any information from it, only rote) and did well on the reading parts of tests. She maintains A's and B's in regular classes, nuf said. Don't let anyone tell you that an autistic child does not need speech, or that their IQ indicates they won't retain what they learn. Guest guest
Grace, I didn't see this post at all. Are you sure you don't live in Florida? That is what the IEP team told me at Marilla's meeting just before we ran from St. Pete. They said that her IQ scores indicated that she would never progress beyond where she was so speech class is a waste of time. I am sorry you had to hear that nonsense. Okay, she has autism and therefore she is a trifle odd, but how silly of them to say that. I know Marilla is hyperlexic and actually the outcome for hyperlexic kids tends to be pretty good probably because they are in fact quite bright. That is bull$#!+ Actually, Barb, I agree SO much. My oldest son (who is fourteen) had an IQ test done on him this year and his score was 109. Okay, but not remarkable. Well, if you knew him you would think he was quite brilliant. He IS quite brilliant. All his academic scores on the IQ test were quite high, with quite a few above the 90th percentile. But he did astonishingly poorly in some areas; Picture arranging was only in the 9th percentile; it has an element of social judgment as you must arrange pictures in the order they happened and many of the pictures involve people and situations. His coding was bad because he has poor fine motor skills. An online IQ test rated him at 165 and I actually think that as an academic measure that is probably more accurate. The online tests just give you a few types of questions and they tend to match up pretty well because most people's abilities are pretty consistent. AS kids abilities are wildly inconsistent. I knew this before Enrique's IQ was tested and that was the first thing that jumped out at me. He was tested by a psychologist's office that did not specialize in autism but still I wondered how they could doubt he had AS when they saw stuff like that. But they did.
