Trisomy 10q is a duplication of her 10th chromosome on the long arm. She has 3

copies and the 3rd copy ended up on the short arm of chromosome 5p. That

portion of 5p is totally gone. My daughter does not talk but I have taught her

to use sign language. In the past we have heard some words but not recently.

With the baby now babbling, she is trying more to talk too. We were told she

would never walk, yet at age 3.8 years she took her first step and you can't

stop her now. The doctors don't know what to expect as they have never seen

anyone with this exact duplication/deletion. My sister age 52 was diagnosed at

age 48 because of my daughter. My daughter isn't anything like my sister is so

they can't be compared. I know how it was growing up with my sister so I tell

the doctors about her and they tell me my daughter will be just like her. I

have news for them because I won't accept that and I will do all I can to help

my daughter. My sister grew up when no one would help my parents and yes she is

severe but had they had help she would have maybe been able to take care of

herself more than she can now.

You can do a search about Trisomy 10q but it's always with a different

chromosome and the severity of the syndrome is different. No major organ

problems. She wears glasses. She is low muscle toned. The baby (DS) has great

muscle tone. Only problem she really has is with constipation. We are working on

that.

Good for you! You are so right! First, you can never compare one person to

another. But mainly when people look at the adults that are 40+ years old now,

they try to compare what will happen to this generation and there is no

comparison! The support systems, education and acceptance makes a HUGE

difference in the outcome of the individual. People your sister's age didn't

have any help what-so-ever back in the day, and so, of course, they have a

harder time! I am glad to hear she is trying to talk now! That is huge! I know

that when I had my youngest son, I worried about how that would affect Tim.

Thankfully, it helped him tremendously and encouraged him to mature more with a

little brother following his footsteps!

You are perfectly welcome to stay with us! My guess is that she does have MDS

and they just haven't looked good enough! But either way, it doesn't matter! If

you are happy with our group, then we are happy to have you!

It sounds like you have just the right attitude to help your daughter. I love

that sign language is so widely accepted now as a genuine way to help with

communication in hearing children. I LOVE it! I can't imagine getting past

some of the hurdles without it! Thank you for sharing your information with us!

I am interested in what Trisomy 10q is. Are they both your biological

children? Do you have DS? Sorry to be so nosey, but you are the first

person that I have heard from on the board that has 2 children with DS. Our

son was born with MDS and we were told that there is a 1% chance of our next

also having DS.

Angie,

Just to clear this up, Trisomy 10q is not Down syndrome. It is a completely

different chromsome problem. There are hundreds of different syndromes and you

can have a trisomy, deletion or mosaic of any chromsome. There are different

names for each one and each one has different problems with it.

You do have a 1% chance of having another child with MDS. But, basically, they

just say that to have a statistic. We are still researching on how MDS happens

and although our researchers understand how it happens, they are not sure of the

risks of having another child with it. So, they go with the same risks that

apply to Down syndrome. Which, in all actuality, they can't accurately say that

you have a 1% risk (like Down syndrome) because Down syndrome and mosaic Down

syndrome happen completely different.

Angie,

My oldest son has MDS, and the rest of my children, 5 more in total, so far,

are perfectly " normal " . I have had 3 miscarriages, with one of those recieving

a chromosomal analysis. The results of the analysis showed no chromosomal

abnormality.

Hopefully this helps.

Hello,

First of all, I am not Down syndrome. Second, my 2 girls are diagnosed with 2

different chromosome abnormalities. Yes, they are my biological children.

Trisomy 10q is: Instead of having 2 copies of 1oq, she has 2 copies but the

bottom tip of 10q replaced a portion (upper tip) of chromosome 5p (it's totally

gone). There is no name for it as it's very rare. As far as we know, my sister

and my daughter are the only 2 in the world with this deletion/duplication.

We knew we were high risk for a child with DS or Trisomy 10q, as I have lost 4

babies. My older 2 are typical developing 18 and 20 year olds.

It's hard work having 2 children both with different needs but God blessed me

when he gave them to me. I feel special as I got 2 children with different

needs.

Thanks for asking. Any more questions, please ask.

Ok my stats are...

My oldest 2 (20 and 18) from my first marriage are " normal " . I then remarried

and lost a baby in 2000. Then my daughter with Trisomy 10q was born in 2002. I

then lost 2 babies in March and May of 2004 another July 2005 and then my

daughter with DS was born 6-6-06!! I also have 2 step children of one with

ADHD. So 2 out of 8/10 . No testing was done on the babies that I lost.
