I had the same experience- better hearing AFTER going deaf in one ear. When the right AN was removed, it removed a lot of distortion. It was always hard for me to explain to my friends, because I didn't completely understand it myself, but my hearing problems back then weren't completely due to volume (not hearing sounds). There was a diminished volume, but what was worse was the distortion, caused by the fact that the sound waves, upon entering the ear, had to travel around and through the AN tumor on the acoustic nerve, making things almost impossible to understand clearly. I remember my friends calling me on the phone and YELLING because they knew I was losing my hearing, and this only made it worse. After the right AN was removed, the distortion was gone, and I could actually understand things better. Unfortunately, it didn't last long (had the second AN removed a year later.). I still say it's easier being deaf than hearing and not being able to understand things, which is one reason I have never seriously considered an ABI. I still remember the last tapes and albums I was listening to, right up until that last surgery (sigh). And then, right about the time I went deaf, heavy metal died. Coincidence? Maybe. PS Sorry for the rambling- my wife is off doing laundry, and I tend to ramble when I am bored.
Guest guest
Hi Craig, This is from the other and Craig team. Glad is doing so well. Craig has had the same surgical team and they are great. I have been working in the field of counseling with Deaf kids the last 3 years at the WA School for the Deaf...it's a great field for those with a hearing loss as well as those who are hearing. There's such a need in the field of mental health counseling for therapists who can sign and have knowledge of deafness/Deaf Culture/Late Deafened/Hard of Hearing. I'm now in CA and trying to set up a clientele of the above mentioned folks. I'd be happy to share more if is interested. Take care,

Guest guest
Hello again , I've just finished reading your email. I know a few friends of mine who are very interested in doing an internship with the kind of program you are talking about. Maybe you could talk to someone at my university (California State University, Northridge) to set up something like that. If you're interested in pursuing this, I'll pass on the word to my friends and a professor who handles internships with students. This would be a very good experience for my fellow students. They not only see what they hear about in the classroom, but they get to experience it as well. Well, let me know what you think. Until later, Mark ----Original Message Follows---- From: VMTucker@... Guest guest
Mark, Where are you going to school and what's your degree in? It's hard to believe I'd give anyone hope...I just moved to CA and the licensing laws are so strict here for therapists that my hours of experience out of state might not count, and I may be starting over with the 3000 hour requirement for licensure! Ugh! Take care,
Guest guest
Mark, I'd be happy to talk about this further. I'm the only MFCC intern here at the Conejo Counseling Center who is interested in working with Deaf clients, but they (the directors) are always looking for more interns and are excited and supportive about opening up services to the Deaf/Hard of Hearing/Late Deafened communities. Do you know people looking to become MFCC interns or trainees? What program are you in? Thanks,
