Good point! A pediatric neurologist is also an excellent choice for all the medical testing. We used Dr. Rotenberg. He has shorter wait times than Texas Children's. He's also a sleep disorder specialist. My son's sleep (and lack of sleep) used to rule our lives before we went to see Dr. Rotenberg.

 

Dr. on at UT Childrens Learning Center....He is very good and will give an accurate picture of where the child is at. Also consider Dr. Frye Ped. Neurology at UT Physicians to rule out medical problems. Takes a while to get appointments so CALL NOW!

Hi Lorree,

A DAN doctor looks at the medical conditions associated with autism....NOT just the behavioral conditions. They treat these underlying conditions with nutrition, supplementation, chelation, and medications if needed. Usually they start with diet elimination and basic supplementation. They will do lots of lab to evaluate your child to look at mitochondrial functioning, if your child is detoxifying appropriately, does you child have dysbiosis, etc. Treating you childs medical conditions is essential to the recovery process. It's a critical piece that many families leave out.

I am thinking of trying a new doctor for my son who specializes in autism disorders. Can you explain what tests and evaluations these doctors will do and what the treatments are for health and functioning? Do they just medicate or do they truely use treatments that work like nutrition, supplements, therapies, etc. I dont want my son medicated. thanks.

We have made great strides in his helath and functioning.Once diagnosed, for more in depth biomedical ( Dr. Frye does a little depending on the medical diagnosis), go to either Dr. Pothiluri in Humble or Thoughtful House Center for Children in Austin. I am looking for someone who can do all the testing (nutritional deficiencies, heavy metal, gluten/casien sensitivity, mitochondrial dysfunction, immune and autoimmune issues, and then prescribe the proper protocols to remedy the issues with diet and/or medications if needed. I dont want my son just put on a stimulant adhd drug without actually getting to the root cause of his issues, if we can have a chance to find out what they might be.

I took my son to Texas Childrens here in Houston and he saw a pediatric neurologist from the blue bird clinic. He had some blood work done, no MRI and the doc actually said not to do more testing he didnt have autism. But maybe PDDNOS. He was wierd. I dont think they had mitochondrial testing then. He only had tests for chromosones and trisomy and I think that was all. His final report came back with PDDNOS/Autism and ADHD. That was 2 years ago. I want to now do more in depth testing for the other factors like i mentioned previously. We have him on a gluten free diet right now, very early into it, and I am already seeing significant results wtih his behavior.

Loree,I am not entirely clear on what you are looking for, just biomedical for autism ( nutrition, heavy metal and toxin removal, etc) or neurological testing and treatmetn if a disorder is found. Both can also be used together.For just straight biomed, Dr. Pothiluri in Humble or Thoughtful House in Austin can do. I have had my son at TH for the last 5.5 years with good results. He is High Functioning Asperger's and Moderate ADHD. He also has a host of immune and autoimmune related disorders that biomed has helped a lot for to alleviate symptoms and improve immune functioning. It consists of nutrition ( after testing to discover deficiencies), some prescription drugs when called for ( ie B12 shots and Low Dose Naltrexone for instance), and diet depending on theri findings. It never hurts to clean up the diet, which is what we did. We saw no difference on any particular diet, but many people have seen significant difference.For neurological testing and to find out if there is an underlying dysfucntion that is causing the autism symptoms, then a Ped. Neurologist that specializes in Autism related disorders can be helpful. We have discovered that my son has Mitochondrial Dysfunction ( not quite bad enough to be labeled "disease", but bad enough to affect him). We have further refined his nutritional supplements as nutrition is the only treatment known yet for Mito Dysfunction/Disease. We have seen tremendous strides in several areas. His vision improved significantly and his moods are much better. Our Neuro, Dr. Frye is familiar with the biomed approach and is very good about answering all your questions. Is any of this cheap - no. However, when I look at my insurance statements ( I submit for reimbursement form TH), thier charges are not any doifferent really than our family doctor. However, my family doctor only spends ten minutes with me, wheras DAN! doctors will typically spend several hours the first visit and anywhere from 1/2 to 1 hour on followup visits. Lab testing is not cheap either, but most doctors will tailor to your budget and/or insurance, ordering the most important based upon your child's symptoms. I usually get reimbursed up to the maximum of my plan with no trouble. Neurologists typically take most common insurance as they tend to work for teaching hospitals.
