Guest guest Posted June 6, 1999 Report Share Posted June 6, 1999 I tried checking DMV on the web, and founds lots for some states, but nothing pertaining to PA, but maybe I need to use a different search engine; anyhow I ttalked to my son in Missouri today, and is going to check out there requirements, which seem fairly easy; however they punch a hole in your PA license if you get a Missouri license! Not sure I want to do that yet? Guess I need to talk to a lawyer. That was terrific! I may not be the world's best driver, but I know I am a lot better than the people who driver around deep in conversation on their cell phone! Guest guest Posted June 6, 1999 Report Share Posted June 6, 1999 I agree Lynn, my eyes were bad BEFORE surgery, and I limited myself severly as far as driving was concerned; but it just drives me nuts, cause I see perfectly now; yesterday If was with some Acoustic Neuroma Assoc. friends, several of whom have MUCH worse balance than I, two who wear wrap around sunglasses cause they cannot stand daylight, and THEY ALL drive!! I will fight, just have to find out how! I'm thinking I may have to fight it; cause if you go out of State and get license, they punch a hole, etc. in your license; so then when you get a letter saying turn it in, and you send it, they see the hole and know you got one somewhere else! I'm afraid they would then somehow notify your insurance company. Guest guest Posted June 7, 1999 Report Share Posted June 7, 1999 Marie, I had major problems after my 2nd AN removal and had to spend about 6 months in a therapy hospital. Although I did not lose my license, I had to go back for a complete re-test (visual, written and road). I was give a time limit for this or I would lose my license. I did have coordination problems but I practiced driving (my parents did not like the idea). My girlfriend helped me and we started in a parking lot! (driving and not doing what you may be suspecting). When it came time for the tests, I knew my driving was good and I passed all of them. I suspect some doctor turned me in too (Over here, it is against the law if a doctor knows you have a problem that effects your driving and does not inform the transport ministry). Because this was a re-test for medical reasons, I was not charged for the tests. Although there was a lot of frustration in setting everything up, I was happy to do it because this proved I was not a hazard to pedestrians or other drivers. (Actually, by the time of the test, I had pretty well known this and passing a road test does NOT really say much about your driving skills). I would not have been thrilled about this if I had to pay upwards of $300 to prove myself. Perhaps the doctor is looking out for your best interest? An accident would surely make this all worth while. However, it seems to me you bumped into Dr. DoGood. I would like to suggest 3 options for you to consider: 1) It is clear that Dr. DoGood has no way of assessing your driving skills. He is only making an assessment of your medical condition. Since he only saw you after your operation, he is not in a position to comment on how your condition has CHANGED. Perhaps you can get 2 doctors (family doctor and your Neuro) who know you better to state in a letter your driving abilities are not affected. You can then forward to the department of driving and make a case that Dr. DoGood is going beyond HIS capabilities. Should this work, rub it in to Dr. DoGood and send him any letters from the department. 2) Ask your department of driving to waive the fees since you are innocence till proven guilty (I think this is how it usually works). State you are willing to pay the fees should you fail your initial testing. 3) Come to Canada and get your D.L. here. I'm pretty sure our fees are lower than $300 and you can benefit greatly on the exchange rate! Whatever you do, I wish you luck! Just doesn't make sense to me that they would renew someone who can't coordinate MERGING into moving traffic. Life in the Burgh! I mean what about people who use hand controls?? And all the talk of out of state licenses seems useless because apparently all the states are now tied together via our great computer network! Your view of " normal " driving will be different that mine. I think people could decide for themselves if everyone was responsible. However, not everyone is. How many people out there continue to drive drunk? You and I view this as crazy but some people still do it. If we left medical problems (or problems in general) for individuals to decide, we would have chaos on the roads (we have near-chaos as it is!). Unfortunately, many people are underestimated by doctors who are too busy to take a good look or do not fully understand the problem. This is likely what happened to Marie. Also, assessing a persons ability to drive is a subjective call and there is no fine line. One doctor will see a problem where another doctor will not. I really do believe that driving is a privilege and not a right. I had a chance to examine the process first hand when I had to repeat my DL testing in 1986. There were frustrations but I believe I was treated fairly. I think it's fair to re-test Marie. What is totally unfair is that they are saddling her with $300+ for the testing. I agree, it is foolhard to apply some sort of yardstick. I know see and walk better than I have in two years; but even when my balance was worse, I still downhill skiied!
