Marie, they tried that on me 20yrs. ago ( but it was the dept. of motor

vehicles). I retook the test so there was nothing they could do. I knew I

would not have a problem passing it, but since I don't know you I would say

look in the mirror and tell yourself you can pass it. Then go take it and

laugh all you want at that Dr. If all else fails, run him over.

Marie, Is this something your state does, this turning patients into the Dept.

of Transpotation?

Unbelievable.

States I know offhand where you would not have problems with a D.L., would be

Texas for sure and

Mississippi and Florida. My 84 year old grandmother is still driving (and she

shouldn't be) even

though her insurance company has dropped her and she has been in countless

accidents over the past

20 years. When she wipes out some family and herself the problem will be over I

guess. She doe

not even speak to my dad since his last of many attempts to take her keys away

and he has talked

to law enforcement there and everything. She is still dirving, bumping into

people and driving

away, pulling out in front of an 18 wheeler on an interstate and causing a

multi-car/truck

accident, etc. It is horrible. He would even diable her car and she would just

call a tow truck

who would take it straight to a mechanic. The only person benefiting from that

were the mechanic

and towe truck drivers and the people who could drive -free for about 12

hours. So you could

get a license in Mississippi for sure. Just watch out for my grandmother while

you are there.

She is the one driving/swerving down the road with her blinker on.

This is a serious problem for you and I am not making light. Someone suggested

that you retest

and I would certainly try that. Sorry you have run into this latest obstacle in

your fight to

stay independent and self-sufficient.

Take care,

Kim

P.S. Don't shoot the doctor. Prison food and decor is notoriously yucky.

Kim,

Actually, that might be my husband's 80-something-year-old grandmother. :-)

(She lives in MS too. Eeek!)

In NY you have to present 2 utility bills in your name as proof of residence

or I think if you a minor it's your parents who have to show proof of

residence.

Many State DMV offices have Websites with all that info, you could check

there.

I think I'd probably find out about a Re-test or appeal the decision first,

there must be some appeals process.

I've always had less than stellar vision and have had to get an eye doc to

sign a form stating I could drive, thus getting me by the eye test. But this

year I was asked to renew by mail, no mention of providing the form. I guess

my good driving record the past 4 years (since last renewal) got me by that.

I've never heard of a neuro " turning you in " though. I live in Nevada and my

neuro lives in CA, so that may help. I guess NV doesn't have a dipstick law

like that. I'm going to try nd keep driving as long s I think I can handle

it. Hopefully at least a couple more years, but I am following in Jordan's

path and my vision will fade. Maybe quickly. My point? If I had just let the

DMV tell me " no " when I was 17 I would have missed out on over 15 years of

driving. I'm not perfect, but no accidents that were my fault in my life. So

fight the DMV. See another neuro who may disagree with the first.

Thanks for the tips,, yes, apparently PA is fairly strict about this; I think it

is a law, but most

docs kind of just warn the patient, but I happened to run across a " strictly by

the book: type of guy;

I am going to call DMV and see if I can retest, but I doubt it; Thanks for the

tip about Fla; I have a

friend there, and it might be cheaper to fly down than to get a driver's

evaluation! Guess we have

both extremes, with PA where I can now see fine, and Missippi, where anyone

drives!! Marie

Not positive about this myself since I haven't had an international

driver's license since my German days; but I think you can apply through

any travel agent to get one. They really are for driving in foreign

countries--meaning if you go to Europe or some place and plan to rent a

car; you have to have an international driver's license. You have to

KNOW all the international road signs--not sure what else. (The military

test to drive in Germany required all that and a lot more.) It was not

all that expensive, either--$11 comes to mind but you do need a passport

picture to go with it. As a citizen, I don't think you can use it as a

driving license here. Sorry, my friendly travel agent is closed for the

weekend! ie

Hi Marie -

Definitely can relate to your story. :(

You can appeal. not fun -- but you can do it.

I have been appealing, having Med tests, taking *refresher* courses in

driving, since last Nov. All on top of having an almost perfect driving

record. (not even parking tickets) One file person found an old medical

record from after a surgery that recommended that I didn't drive. Well I

don't drive right after surgery until I feel better.

I've been driving with hand-controls for 20 years and totally deaf 10

years. I do have to be super cautious. constantly scan my views and

mirrors. Take a breAk from driving when I don't feel strong, etc As

long as I honestly feel I can do it --I want to drive. This is So CA

-- and that's the only way to get most places. :)

Finally, last Wed I had another driving test and passed it . Now just

have to wait for *paperwork*. Hang in there. Don't drive on **bad days*.

Keep appealing. And of course, don't drive when you know you shouldn't.

hugs,

LynnBK
