Guest guest
A prime example of how " words " can make a person or break a person. I am glad we encouraged you. http://ideas.live.com/programpage.aspx?versionId=7adb59de-a857-45ba-81cc-685ee3e\ 858fe

Guest guest
Hi Kristy! I am fairly new to the group and was reading some old postings and found this one from you about telling your son about his MDS when he was older. My daughter, Meredith, is 3 and so far her MDS delays have been very mild. She also has hardly any of the physical characteristics associated with DS. She was diagnosed shortly after birth when a nurse who was tending to her in the hospital nursery noticed the large space between her big and second toes and the crease on the bottom of her foot. She alerted the pediatrician -- who broke the news to us -- and the pediatarician ordered the genetic testing. The genetecist suspected MDS and his diagnosis was confirmed several days later. Meredith has received EI services since she was 4 months old and has excelled at everything. She amazes us daily! Her main delays are in PT, but they are relatively mild compared to other kids. Her therapists have always said that if it wasn't for the keen eye of that nurse, we might never have known to get her tested. On the other hand, who knows what delays she would have exhibited if we hadn't gotten her into EI so early??? Well anyway, she has now phased out of EI and is now only receiving PT 1x week per the school district CPSE (her scores were too high to qualify for anything else). And, as she is nearing school age and the anxieties and fears I have about her being labeled and teased by her peers intensify, I worry about the day when she will realize (or we will have to tell her) that she has MDS. Right now, she is a beautiful, outgoing, smart, imaginative, confident, sweet girl who has no clue that she is any different than any of her friends and classmates in her typical preschool, and I would hate to be the one or, on the other hand, to have some insensitive person -- a teacher, a classmate, a parent -- destroy that. Maybe I am being too melodramatic and pessimistic, but it's hard to stay positive when the " what if " 's start running in my head! Anyhow, if you don't mind me asking, how did you keep your son from knowing for so long??? What were your reasons??? How did you break the news??? How has the news affected him??? His relationships??? I look forward to hearing back from you.
