Guest guest
If you are near the Dallas area, there is a team of doctors at ish Rite Hospital clinic who assess and deal with this. I think that they call it the " intoeing Clinic " but they also look at Toe Walking. Orthotics that fit in the shoes/around the ankle are often the course of action, depending on how much range of motion the child has in the ankle joints Aldridge, PhD, CCC/SLP Clinical Faculty University of Texas at Dallas School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences Program in Communication Disorders ________________________________________ From: Texas-Autism-Advocacy [Texas-Autism-Advocacy ] on behalf of omalleyfamily1 [serenaomalley@...] Sent: Friday, January 07, 2011 9:58 AM To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Subject: Re: TIP TOE WALKING I'm only a year into this journey, but I'd imagine that toe walking, if it's going to be addressed at all, is going to be addressed by an O/T specializing in sensory issues....unless your physical therapist also specializes in sensory issues. My 3 year old toe walks a lot, and although we don't address it directly, it gets addressed by offering him alternative sensory input with the occupational therapy. > > HI EVERYONE,,,MY SON DARIAN IS ALREADY 8 YRS OLD,,,DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO GET OFF HIS TIP TOES AT ALL,,,HE GETS PHYSICAL THERAPY BUT NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK,,, WAT SHOULD I DO?? Guest guest
I have also seen some kids who do it when they are consitipated or trying to " hold " their bowel movements Aldridge, PhD, CCC/SLP Clinical Faculty University of Texas at Dallas School of Behavioral and Brain Sciences Program in Communication Disorders ________________________________________ From: Texas-Autism-Advocacy [Texas-Autism-Advocacy ] on behalf of Huddleston [sandra_huddleston@...] Sent: Friday, January 07, 2011 10:01 AM To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Subject: Re: TIP TOE WALKING I have read many times that toe walking is due to yeast. Diflucan is usually prescribed and a low sugar/carb diet is recommended. ________________________________ To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Sent: Fri, January 7, 2011 8:56:52 AM Subject: TIP TOE WALKING HI EVERYONE,,,MY SON DARIAN IS ALREADY 8 YRS OLD,,,DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO GET OFF HIS TIP TOES AT ALL,,,HE GETS PHYSICAL THERAPY BUT NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK,,, WAT SHOULD I DO?? Guest guest
When my son was 2 (he is 13 now), he used to toe walk, that along with speech delay was one of the reasons that led us to the autism diagnosis. He no longer does it. he stooped on his own around 3 years old. Sometimes, they go through phases move different behaviors. However, there could be different explanations and reasons. Guest guest
You may find that by addressing constipation will help the matter. In our home it did. However we were doing such a whole body approach it's impossible to know exactly why the toe walking stopped. We were doing a yeast free diet, enemas daily, along with ABA when this problem stopped. He also stopped flapping his hands/arms during this time. Yeast and constipation related....growth in the intestines. I learned that a child can be having bowel movements and still be constipated. I did daily enemas for many months in a row using an enema bag with filtered water. Even with bowels moving, there can be fecal matter that needs time and multiple cleansings to be removed. Medical doctors often reccomend miralax. I don't believe this to be best. You may also use high dose Magnesium to bowel tolerance. For us, nothing was instantly fixed. This along with every other issue took months of diligence and learning to correct the situation. all the best > > HI EVERYONE,,,MY SON DARIAN IS ALREADY 8 YRS OLD,,,DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO GET OFF HIS TIP TOES AT ALL,,,HE GETS PHYSICAL THERAPY BUT NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK,,, WAT SHOULD I DO?? Guest guest
Hi Marlee, My son toe walked and he was about 8 when we sought help. He was beginning to have some deformity in his feet and although our pediatrician had continued to say that he would probably outgrow it, he didn't. Finally, he referred me to ish Rite. They wanted to cut his heel cords to help with the tightness in his heels. I couldn't imagine putting him through surgery and casts for anytime so I sought help with a physical therapist. She referred me to therapeutic horseback riding at Equest and to a massage therapist for cranial sacral massage therapy (not the same as with a chiropractor). After a short time with hippotherapy and stretching exercises, he was off his toes and walking normally. The physical therapist said that he was not only tight in his heels and that the surgery would have helped on temporarily due to that. The massage therapy to loosen the tightness in his cranium also was necessary for a full recovery from toe walking. Today, my son's feet are very wide across his toes and narrow at the heel. If you see an adult that is still toe-walking as I have, their feet turn outward and the walk on the edge of their foot. The legs and ankles also appear deformed. It is not something to wait on. You should get him in hippotherapy asap, Best of luck, Pam To: Texas-Autism-Advocacy Sent: Fri, January 7, 2011 8:56:52 AMSubject: TIP TOE WALKING HI EVERYONE,,,MY SON DARIAN IS ALREADY 8 YRS OLD,,,DOESN'T SEEM TO WANT TO GET OFF HIS TIP TOES AT ALL,,,HE GETS PHYSICAL THERAPY BUT NOTHING SEEMS TO WORK,,, WAT SHOULD I DO??
