Guest guest
Fungus in biodiesel fuel tank slows Bunker Hill buses By THE ASSOCIATED PRESS Journal and Courier - Lafayette,IN http://www.jconline.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article? AID=/20070210/NEWS09/70210006 BUNKER HILL - It wasn't just frigid weather that caused Maconaquah School Corp. to delay the start of classes Friday by two hours - a fungus also played a role. Ron Kirkpatrick, the administrative assistant to Superintendent Carmine Gentile, said fungal and bacterial growths were found in the main biodiesel tank used to fuel up the district's buses. Kirkpatrick said the substance, which was of the same consistently of melted caramel, clogged up the buses' fuel filters and left the vehicles stalled. " We couldn't get the buses to run. They were replacing fuel filters and finding all this gunk built up around them, " he said. A specialist diagnosed the problem and added a cleaning substance to the tank to kill the bacteria and fungal growths on Friday morning. In the meantime, bus drivers who needed fuel were sent to a gas station in the town about 65 miles north of Indianapolis. " Some already had enough fuel, but some were low. We didn't want to put that fuel in, " Kirkpatrick said. He said the fuel tanks are inspected periodically, and this is the first time they've ever discovered bacterial and fungal infections. " It's kind of shocking to us. "
