The supply of medics coming fresh out of class is higher than the demand which lowers the overall pay scale. In some places starting out pay is barely $1 over minimum wage. I recently read the results of studies suggesting that changing from 24 hour to 12 hour shifts (2 on, 2 off, 3 on, 2 off, 2 on, 3 off) decreases stress, exhaustion and improves patient care (as a side note, the study also said EMT divorce rates also significantly decreased) . In a non-stop area like Austin, this would seem to make even more sense. I have 3 paramedics working for me that are close to 50K. Yes we are hiring now and the protocols, call volume and paramedics are fantastic. We refer to this overtime as scheduled overtime vs non-scheduled overtime, which would be extra shifts, staying late...... You get 1 month vacation and holiday time off a year and that is at a 56 hour week also. If you are off sick for a week that is a 56 hour week also and you get your time and a half while on vacation and off sick. People should not be expected to lose money when they go on vacation or when they report off. In order to insure that our people would take vacations and report off when really sick, we implemented this OT into every payday (112 hrs and guaranteed 32hrs Ot a payday.) Now realize that you only earn so much sick time a year. We havent lost our minds completely. Most of our paramedics have been with the service 8 years or longer and several are over 10 years now and finally making EMS a career. This is a City Service and we do not experience layoffs. We only make 911 calls. You must be a Paramedic with 2 years 911 experience to apply. We have city health plans, municipal retirement (TMRS), Normally 2 raises a year, cost of living and annual promotion and very few of our people are making 8.50 an hour very long. We have special pay for FTO, Station Coordinators, Shift supervisors, asst. Shift supv.(we ride 2 EMTP supv. per shift in a suburban as an assistance to write DOS's, refusals at MVC's (so our people can either transport injured or get back in service) assist in full and Trauma arrests (one supv. gets off suburban and rides with Trauma Alerts and full arrests) and the other goes on to assist the other units. There is a career ladder in place and a line trying to get in. However the training and internship are very strict and only less that 10% of original applicants make it to the interview. This is why we advertise for Paramedics with exper. all over the state. No one in our dept. makes less than 36K a year and most are over 40K. This is because we stay with the dept and dont get laid off or transferred to another city or state, or suddenly wake up and find our private company has picked up and moved. We like it here and we would hope you would also. Give a squat and call us. You may be making the best move of your life. I would point out as a foot note, that we have 800 EMS Providers in Texas (many volunteer services that receive no pay), and we have 850 first responder organizations that respond, and get out of bed for nothing to save a life. I'm all for first responders and volunteer services, but as long as we have groups that do this for " FREE " I personally don't see many areas having an incentive to pay very much. I guess I would ask the question " How many medical professions have a large workforce that works for free, and their profession is paid a good salary? " I did notice in the Austin paper about two days ago that 16 of the 17 paramedics (many part time) resigned in Bartlett, Tx, because they said $6.00 an hour wasn't enough for a job that saves lives. Guest guest Posted December 30, 1998 Report Share Posted December 30, 1998 First I want to say that I strongly believe that EMS salaries (and the salaries of many other front line health care providers) are way, way too low. We must make sure challenge employers to provide decent wages that are commensurate with the job duties AND make sure that as a work force we provide employers with top notch employees who are worth those dollars. Paying bottom dollar for a revolving door of entry level personnel provides the employer and the public with exactly what they pay for...a bunch of learning experiences before the good medics move on to something that will pay them what they are worth. That said, I feel that career and volunteer services can co-exist. Many times the volunteer organizations are created to fill a void where a need exists that can not be met otherwise, either due to limited resources of the area being served or because the population base does not provide enough volume to be cost effective or profitable. Here in Austin, we have a career transport service (City of Austin EMS), career transfer service (for-profit businesses), and first responders (Austin FD in the city and volunteer FD's in the county). In other parts of the state where I have worked we had volunteer EMS for 911 calls and career for-profit services for transfers. None of these entities are in competition with the other, so therefore the fact that some are career and others are volunteer does not affect the pay checks of either. Until we, as a profession, decide that flipping burgers and stocking grocery stores is not equivilent to saving lives as in the middle of nowhere at o'dark thirty and demand respectable wages, we're going to get what the employers want to offer us. Wages are a result of supply and demand, if the supply is high and the demand low, wages are low and vice versa. To get higher wages, we must either limit demand or improve the product. (DFW is a great example of where the product is improved [medics crossed trained for PD/FD] with some of the best starting salaries of the recruiters at the EMS conference.) We should look at entities where the career personnel are able to retire from, and see what they did to keep people long enough to be able to retire. This could be our model for the future. I would point out as a foot note, that we have 800 EMS Providers in Texas (many volunteer services that receive no pay), and we have 850 first responder organizations that respond, and get out of bed for nothing to save a life. I'm all for first responders and volunteer services, but as long as we have groups that do this for " FREE " I personally don't see many areas having an incentive to pay very much. I guess I would ask the question " How many medical professions have a large workforce that works for free, and their profession is paid a good salary? " I did notice in the Austin paper about two days ago that 16 of the 17 paramedics (many part time) resigned in Bartlett, Tx, because they said $6.00 an hour wasn't enough for a job that saves lives. I can think on no other occupation which requires the level of knowledge and elemet of responsibility that EMT-P's do and receive such a minimal salary. As Ron so eloquently pointed out, the number of professional volunteers coupled with the relatively small call volume percapita that the EMS system as a whole has causes these situations. Our organization is comprised of about 60 volunteers and we use two part-time paid paramedics on week days. The paid people receive $9.00 an hour and work a maximum of two 12 hr shifts per week. With our call volume of about 1600 runs a year, we could not support a fully paid staff at this pay rate. So what is the solution? Of course that is the big question and I don't believe anyone has a correct answer which will fit every case.
