Debbie,

I never did have alot of liver pain so I couldn't answer that one. I

just have the occasional spasm.

Hi Debbie,

Yes, it can. When my husband's ascites got really bad and before he began taking

his diuretics, he would hold his hand over his liver and kind of push it a bit -

most of the time without realizing he was doing it - because he was in pain.

And yes, if you are having pains on your left side, chances are it is an

enlarged spleen. My hsband has this as well. However, when his ascites is under

control with his meds, he doesn't hurt but occasionally (both his spleen and

liver...).

I read earlier about an enlarged spleen and I think that's definitely causing

I have an ulcer which I know they can give medication for but does the asitities

Thanks Kerri. From what I've read and from what everyone has said I do believe

this is what's going on. I have trouble breathing as well and it always feels as

if I've just eaten a huge meal when in fact about the only thing I can handle is

a piece of toast. The trouble is trying to get the gastro that I see to do

anything. I can't seem to make him understand how sick I feel. I think really

that he wrote me off the very first time I saw him and told him that I'd never

be doing tx. I hope your husband is feeling better. What meds are they giving

him?...Debbie

Debbie,

You're welcome. Yes, that sounds exactly right. It truly is like being very

pregnant with the ascites. The liquid pushes your organs around causing less

room making it hard to breath and hard to eat more than just a little bit at a

time. My husband went through all of this before he got on his meds. He takes 2

diuretics - Lasix (80 mg) and Aldactone (200 mg). How bloated are you? Are your

feet and legs swollen? I say go make an appointment and just have him check you

out. Is there any way you can get a new doctor? One that will help a bit more?

Debbie,

Your nutrition is sooooo important with this disease. Be sure your

getting adequate nutrients....I'd be talking to your doctor about this

too. Maybe try some of that Ensure? Don't mean to sound like your

mother but I think part of the reason I blew up was also from

malnutrition because I wasn't eating much. My appetite isn't that

great some days but I know I have to eat something good for me plus I

get really shaky if I don't. Keep fresh fruit around and be sure and

take vitamins. Just a pot of soup is great when you can't eat much.

I hope you get to feeling better soon and let us know what the doctor

says.

I know Roni. I once read " let your food be your medicine and your medicine be

your food " and I think that's true to a large extent. For the past month my

appetite has just vanished and yet I don't lose any weight. The soup sounds good

and in fact I found a liver healthy soup recipe the other day on WEBMD that I'm

going to make. I got a break today for a change. In Florida there is some kind

of program called Healthier Florida. Apparently it's funded by Medicaid

insurance that I have and is for people who have serious , chronic illness. I

received the packet today in the mail. They work with you in educating and

advocating for you. There is a number where I can call and talk to a Registered

Nurse 24/7 ! I called right after getting it and the nurse triaged me over the

phone and told me to call my gastro and tell him that based on their decision

that he should see me in his office within the next 3 hrs. and if not for me to

call her back and they would make record of it and she would advise me from

there. I called the gastro and his office tried to deny that I had called on

Mon. & Wed. practically begging for help and that they said the doctor said he

would ok the CT scan without having to drink the chalk but that he DIDN'T say

that was all he could do for me. It was definitly not the truth and that's

exactly what they told me. Ended up that he supposedly won't be back in the

office till next Tues. but that if I felt that bad to go to the ER. It's not as

bad as it's been so I'm going to hold out till tomorrow. I have to see my PCP

each month to get my prescription of Xanax and that's all he's good for because

he's almost a total idiot and doesn't have hospital priveledges ANYWHERE which

to me speaks volumes about him in itself. Thanks for letting me ramble...Take

care, Debbie

Debbie,

I just can't believe these doctors! I really like my PCP and my

gastro.....last time I went I didn't have to pay my pcp because I was

laid off and don't have insurance anymore. He gave me numbers to call

to help with my labs....etc. I've applied for disability so I'm

waiting to hear on that. I really hope you find some better doctors

that care about you. Sometimes asking nurses for referals helps

because they know the good ones.

I asked my GP about 1-1/2 years ago when she thought I'd finally deliver this

baby (my belly was soooo extended). However, I don't eat very much either and

don't have ascites.

You know, there is really no purpose to seeing a Gastro if you flatly refuse

treatment. Your regular Dr. can read your blood work just as well as an

expensive Gastro. There is very very little that the Gastro can do for you

after refusing treatment.

I've heard of all these people that juice their veggies etc. and it looked like

work to me. Then a gal friend was juicing when I was there for a couple of

nights. I was able to see how extremely easy it really is!!

Now with the cancer diagnosis, I'm planning to buy one tomorrow and get right

into it.... With both veggies and fruit!! I had quit taking vitamins and

supplements back when I did my first treatment, as I could stand the thought of

any more pills. Still can't!! So, I'm sure hoping this juicing will make it a

whole lot easier to get all those nutrients etc. right from the veggie.

Gloria, I strongly disagree with you about that. The gastroenterologist is there

to treat and support the complications of Hep C regardless of whether a person

is on tx or not. The gastro is there to educate me about what is good for my

liver and what is not. He is there to treat the digestive problems that

accompany the Hep C. He is the one who should have greater knowledge on what lab

tests and procedures that can be done. He treats people with digestion trouble

who don't have Hepatitis and who don't have cirrhosis so why should I be any

different because I CHOOSE not to do treatment? CHOOSING not to do conventional

tx that has too low a success rate to satisfy me and that has the capacity and

almost the certainty of making me feel way worse than I already do and that has

the ability to cause permanent health issues and tx for which there are reasons

that don't make me a good candidate for tx shouldn't mean that I don't have the

right to have as good of care as anyone else. I know that you didn't intend to

be hurtful but that's how this felt. It's almost like the stigmitisim that Hep C

sometimes carries...Thanks, Debbie

I sincerely apologize for my words!!! As I reread them, I am truly embarrassed

I said such a thing. You are absolutely right - I was judging something that I

have no right whatsoever to judge. Please forgive me!!

I had chosen treatment for my Hep C and can not honestly tell you of any

permanent health issue from it. Then, of course, I have just finished the trial

with the Telaprivir and it was looking as though I was getting out after 48

weeks as SVR and a new outlook on life. However, this second treatment was not

any picnic in the park and not something that I would not wish to repeat any day

soon. Then again, I have no idea yet of what plans are going to be put to me,

regarding the Liver Cancer now.

Gloria, I'm the one that's truely sorry that I even admitted that I was hurt. I

know you would in no way intentionally hurt anyone's feelings so I'm sorry that

I ended up making you feel bad. I'm either angry or crying. I know I read that

you and someone else in the group said that they don't know who they are

anymore. I feel the same way. We none of us know what is in store for us. You

are a fighter and I think you're gonna kick this cancer just like you kicked the

Dragon !...Best wishes, Debbie

Please - do not give this any more thought, except be there for me at those

times when I'm either angry, crying or just plain old sick and tired. I sure

don't get very much of that out in the real world and so wouldn't want to ever

offend anyone in these rooms; because you are all my life lines.
