Pse help me sort out my thinking on the above.

I thought I understood it and now I am not so sure...

What I thought (and for this reason I bought a medical alert bracelet) was

that, even on physiological does of h.c. that an adrenal crisis could occur if

the h.c. was suddenly stopped.

I am being told that this is not so, that it is only on higher doses that an

adrenal crisis could occur.

I had an iffy moment last week when I was dipping in and out of

consciousness from a combination of heat exhaustion and diuretics so I feel it

is time I

got hy head straight on this one!

thanks.

Thanks Val, that's nice and clear which is what I needed.

What other situations might occur that could be tricky, if not indeed

dangerous, for the self-treater?

Thinking aloud, what occurs straight away is contraindicating meds.

What about surgery for the self-treater? More cortisol before? whether it be

major or dental?

Anything else????????

Thanks.

ANY time you are adrenal insufficient ( are you are especially when on

ANY adrenal meds) there is th possibility of adrenal crisis. This is due

to the fact that extreme stresses DO happen ( a car accident for

example) where you may NEED 300 mg of cortisol NOW. Now healthy adrenals

can make this much. Yours can't. These are the situations the bracelets

will save your life. Medics arriving on the scene will give a shot of

Medrol to cover your adrenal needs if they know you have a problem with

low cortisol. Meds or no meds, if you have adrenal insufficiency, I

believe a med bracelet should be worn. I am completely off HC now but my

bracelet is still on me. Just because I am not positive my adrenals are

back 100%, and until I have testing to confirm that, I will continue to

wear it. Just in case! It is by far safer to have them give you the

extra and you maybe not need it, than not have it and need it, which can

kill you.

Dental appointments almost always call for a BIG stress dose, like 10-20

MG more. Actual surgeries the anesthesiologist and surgeon should BOTH

be aware of the situation and add in Medrol to the IV. Lesser stresses

like a fight with the DH or death in the family or even an illness

require stress dosing but are not likely to cause a crisis unless you

are really close to 's levels. I always stress dosed for things

that made me too shaky or nauseous. If I felt ill at night I would take

an extra 20MG on the spot and when I got up next day it was GONE!
