Tryptophan or 5HTP

Our Dr (Dr Bradstreet) put my two boys on Tryptophan to help sleep and

to hopefully help my son with his mood. I see a lot of people on this

site use 5HTP instead. Is there a reason? Also, how quick does 5HTP

and Tryptophan work?

This doesn't answer your question but, our DAN! Dr suggested St Wort to

convert more

tryptophan to 5-HT. In my son it seemed to be going down the kyneuranate (bad

spelling I

think!) pathway rather than making 5-HT. We have not started it yet, so I can't

tell you if it is

helping or not!

Hi ,

My son's doc recommended l-tryptophan over 5htp when an OAT showed low

tryptophan levels. He felt tryptophan would cross into the brain more

readily than 5htp.

After about a week of 500mg nightly, there were definite changes in

disposition; the corners of his mouth began turning upward at the

slightest pleasantries of the day, and his eyes sparkled with

cheerfulness. I presume it improved the quality of sleep also.
