Guest guest
Â I too have high ammonia levels. I am taking 3 20 gram packages a day of Kristulose (lactulose). The last level was 117. I had another check done last week but have not heard the results. I am wondering if it is ever going to get better or worse. I have no other liver problems. Subject: hepatic encephalopathy To: livercirrhosissupport Date: Wednesday, January 20, 2010, 4:58 PM Â Hello everyone, hope you all are having a wonderful day.... I am hoping you can help me with a question, My dads Ammonia levels continue to rise. He is taking 80mg of lactalose twice a day... Are there other things they could be doing for him? Other medication? Things he should be doing or should not be doing? As of today his ammonia level was 130 and that is the highest we have seen it. His edema is awful and now seeping out of his legs. I am confused one day he seems to be doing well and the next day there is a whole list of set backs. Thank for any comments. I love that I can open my computer and find the comfort that I need! Guest guest
So far, I have been able to keep my ammonia levels down to a point that I don't have to take lactulose just by cutting down on the protein I eat. I have 40 mg or less a day. Guest guest
Dear , it is often repeated to cut down on animal protien, but even wheat has protien as well as a lot of vegetables, nuts, grains etc. Most of the time a doctor will only do a temporary protien restriction, because to do it long term could cause the liver damage to worsen. The liver needs protien every day in well rounded , healthy diet in order to heal and function as well as possible. Many people experience things differently, and it is true that a person could have high ammonia and no mental symptoms, but unfortnately a high ammonia count could actualy further damage the liver as well, so steps must be taken. This is a question for a good hepatologist, and I would advise ou to listen to no one except your dad's liver doctor. Obvious thngs like not eating a big steak or double hamburger are just common sense. If he is put on a restriction, then you will have to read every food lable to see how many grams of protien are in the food and try to comply with the doctors orders, and the protien adds up fast, because so many things contain protien that we dont realize. The lactulose works well for me, but I have to help it out by eating lots of fiber. Good luck, love, Bobby (saadn'leelt- da ya day- n'zho) long life, old age, everything good-Apache prayer ________________________________ To: livercirrhosissupport Sent: Wed, January 20, 2010 3:58:52 PM Subject: hepatic encephalopathy Hello everyone, hope you all are having a wonderful day....
