Guest guest
Marci, How much vitamin C do you give when you do a C-flush. I'd like to try this on my 6 yr. old 56lb. daughter. Guest guest
Karmen: There are differences of opinion and you need to consider your daughter's oxalate levels, as too much C can raise them quickly. Also, you should be sure her kidneys are functioning well before proceeding. Having said that, I usually recommend starting with 500 mg. of buffered vitamin C and giving every 15-30 minutes until diarrhea is induced. Keep track of how many doses you are giving, so you know when you reach bowel tolerance. For example, if you give six doses at 500 mg before she has diarrhea, then bowel tolerance is 3 grams. At that point, you back off the dose a bit (for example, from 3 grams to 2.5 grams) and lengthen the time between doses until you achieve a stool of tapioca consistency. The length of the flush depends on the child's overall health and how problematic constipation is. For a six year old I wouldn't do more than a day or two without talking to your physician first. You need to be sure she is drinking lots of water or other liquids during this time so she does not become dehydrated. This can also be done with powdered Ascorbic Acid, which fizzes a lot and can be mixed with watered down juice. When mixed with plain water, it tastes like strong alka seltzer, but mixed with juice it's almost like a soda (especially with orange juice). Be sure to use a buffered product, to minimize stomach irritation. Hope this is helpful.
