Guest guest
I have heard the conversion is alot less - I also take into account the kcal - they can add up fast. Where did you get the 10-20% figure? Check Nutrition at: Nutrition.teach-nology.com Ortiz, RD nrord@... flaxseed reccomendations I encourage my patients with elevated cholesterol to increase omega 3s in their diet (with fish first, then supplements) and ground flax seed. Is there an upper limit or a comfortable amount that you recommend of ground flax throughout the day? I have read that anywhere between 10-20% conversion takes place to DHA? Guest guest
www.flaxcouncil.ca has excellent resources on flax. 2 tbspfinely ground are the current recommendations. This provides 3600 mg ALA with a 20% conversation to EPA/DHA. I recommend 1000 mg of DHA/EPA daily for heart patients. Thanks Marg Alfieri JUDY D. Guest guest
My counterparts & I no longer recommend flax for men since a study came out saying that it could increase the risk of prostate cancer. The statement I read from CSPI states " There's only limited evidence that alpha-linolenic acid, one of the main ingredients of flaxseed, can protect the heart. But men shouldn't go out of their way to eat more flaxseed, because ALA may raise the risk of prostate cancer. " Source: American Journal of clinical Nutrition 80:204, 2004. Guest guest
I asked Dr. Bruce Holub who is an expert in Omega 3 about the flax - prostrate connection. The study was in rats who were fed a rat chow with flax seed oil in it. The issue was with the oil and not with the ground seed. Regardless, ALA is a very weak Omega 3, and DHA/EPA are very strong Omega 3's.
