Guest guest
Thanks Vicki for sharing this. Here is a link so we can all check it out...... <A HREF= " http://www.pathfinder.com/time/interstitials/inter.html " >Click here: TIME Magazine: The Low-Carb Diet Craze --PAGE 1-- NOVEMBER 1, 1999</A> http://www.pathfinder.com/time/interstitials/inter.html Meniowl@... type2,dx 7/99, d & water aerobics In a message dated 10/26/1999 4:00:02 PM Pacific Daylight Time, WHIMSY2@... writes: << Hi, group, just got my new Time mag and guess what the cover story is? LOW CARB DIETS! I haven't had a chance to read it yet but apparently the focus is, as was the Oprah show, on the Hellers, Atkins diet and recent meeting AMA focus. I suspect they're treating it as " just another fad diet " . A quick glance shows nothing about diabetics and low-carbing, however I'll read it and post again when I have a chance. Guest guest
Well, I read the article. First a correction - I meant the recent ADA (American Dietetic Association) meeting, not AMA. But the article didn't mention that at all...it was mainly about fad diets, of which they obviously consider this one. There was only one mention of low carbing in relation to diabetes and that was a quote from Dr. Bruce Zimmerman, the president of the ADA (yes, our ADA) which of course was not favorable. However, there was a one-page article from a Dr. Woodson C. Merill on " How I became a Low-Carb Believer " which is pretty good. However, again, this is only in regard to weight loss, not diabetic control. Group, here's our chance to REALLY spread the word. I'd like to see a lot of Letters to the Editors on low carbing as a way to control diabetes. Susie, I'd especially hope you could send them something really pointed and succinct - you have such a way with words. Maybe they'll print one of 'em. Letters to the Editors can be sent via email and I hope a lot of you will do this. Keep it short and sweet - but lay it on! And stress that for us diabetics it is a WOE, not a diet! Send it via email to Letters@... If you're really techie you could send it fax; their fax number is 1-. Go for it! Vicki You
Guest guest
Vicki has a great idea about contacting TIME Magazine. It would be helpful if all of us could read the story ourselves before contacting them, so here is the URL of TIME Magazine Online. The low-carbing story is the first one to click on at the upper right of the page: http://www.pathfinder.com/time/ Susie
Guest guest
Well, group, I sent off my letter-to-the-editor to Time. Copy for here so you all can read it too. If you send one, be sure to include your home address and phone number...it's required. It'd be a shame if you sent a wonderful letter and they wouldn't print it because you left that off! Good luck.
