Guest guest Posted October 13, 2001 Report Share Posted October 13, 2001 Hi Thea, I am on the autkids list too. That list has been kinda quiet lately. The school is doing absolutely nothing to help in the potty training aspect of Bria's life. They basically have said that they will help once she is better trained at home. It's just so frustrating because we will put her on the toilet for 15 minutes and she will do nothing, get her off the toilet and into a diaper, she goes within five minutes. I am trying to find a video for her to watch and maybe that might work. We have the Bear in the Big Blue House video that deals with potty training, but that one isn't working. I'm going to try to find the Once Upon a Potty video and see if that does the trick. I'm just at a loss. My brother's girlfriend is a teacher of little ones and does have some special ed credentials and she has seen us use all of her ideas too and she is just amazed that nothing is working. I just know that I have to train her quick because she is getting to big for her diapers. She is in the Pampers size 6. At this rate, I'll be developing Size 7. Oh well, gotta go see what she is up to. Boys do out number girls. I have who is AS. My mom is AS too she is certain of, and I have a cousin that has got to be although her parents are in denial. Welcome to the list. Tell us a little bit about your girl! Would you like to talk about the potty issues??? Goodness knows a lot of us have been thru or are going thru that. My daughter is now 6.8 and was not fully trained until way after 4 years old AND still had numerous accidents up until about 4 or 5 months ago. A lot has to do with the maturity of their little systems and/or sensory issues (where they can't " feel " the need to go). This whole issue requires the patience of a saint, which, speaking for myself, I rarely had. So if you need to vent, feel free! That's what we are here for. What kind of school does your little girl attend? (Uh... what's her name?) Many, many ASD children are not potty trained at 4, Amy - so take heart, and don't let it get you down. I can't say enough good things about her speech and ABA therapists. They are absolutely fantastic except in the area of helping us potty train Bria. I feel like they have no good suggestions. I'm actually looking for a video that she can understand that is very specific in what to do. The one we have she watches more for enjoyment vs. learning how to do it. So between potty training and trying to find a free source of ABA therapy, my husband has been out of work for six months thanks to the economy, I've been very busy. So if I ramble, I know that you all will understand. It seems like my autism lists are the only ones who understand my life anymore. Well, I've got to go and chase down the little one. It isn't any protocol for potty training, it is just a story about how my sweet smart son Putter ruined the best laid plans of moms and behavior analysts. But I will certainly send it to you. Putter is STILL not potty trained, but Kepler is and the same system worked for him. So give it a shot, just be aware that nothing is 100%. Guest guest Posted October 15, 2001 Report Share Posted October 15, 2001 Amy, In case this will be helpful to you....When my boys got large for diapers and were going to school, they wore regular cotton undies with an open diaper inside to catch any accidents they might have. You can get away with a smaller size diaper this way too since you're not taping it to anything. Also, if the back of their jeans dropped at the waist, all the kids saw was a regular cotton waistband so no one was the wiser!
