Guest guest
Jeanie, They just did a barium swallow study on her last week and she showed no signs of aspiration... Thanks, Bradley
Guest guest
, Thanks for the information. We will watch out for these symptoms. Bradley
Guest guest
<<<One thing to look for while you are feeding her at home -does she cough during a feeding? Not a choking sound, a good clearing cough. Our therapist used to make such a production out of coughing. This was because if she did aspirate some, she could feel it and cough - something we all do naturally. This is how we could tell if we gave her too much or something was too thick.>>>> Just a quick note on this subject. When had his barium swallows, he did aspirate and NEVER coughed! We were so shocked that he let formula go down " the wrong way " without gagging. We still don't know why he doesn't cough when that happens. He does cough though, so once again, I can't figure my little guy out! -Steffi

She has some zones of atelectasis SP? on her left lung but her lung never fully fills due to a paralized diaphram so it could be that. She's had one pnemonia, but again it's hard to say what was the cause. A modified barium swallow would show aspiration, I'd push this as it's not something you want to go on for long. Guest guest
Bradley, Kennedy has had two aspiration pneumonias, she gets like really really bad cold like symptoms and coughing alot and trouble breathing at night. I've got my own stethoscope and have learned how to " listen " to see if there's gunk in her lungs as well. This may be a sign for you to look for. Or a chest x-ray would tell you. Kennedy aspirates a small amount when orally fed, the food goes to the back of her throat, and up and out her nose which leaves the possiblity for aspiration when breathed back in. I have been advised NOT to feed her until she outgrows this. {I'm hoping she will soon!}. This has been our experience, hope it's been helpful. I believe all kids with feeding difficulties are aspirating some. Fortunately, not enough to make them really sick. Guest guest
Bradley, I am not an expert here, but I think that a baby may be able to handle their own secretions in small amounts but probably not a foreign substance like food. When Austin would aspirate, he would get really sick, his sats would drop and he had really rattly sounding breathing. I would watch for a low grade fever
Guest guest
Steffi, Austin used to do that too, not protecting his airway consistently when we did barrium swallows. We went back every 6-9 months and retested him. He finally *passed* a swallow study 1.5 years ago when he just turned 3. Maybe the same will happen for your son. Austin, too, had a good suck and he did cough. Good luck, jacque Austin's mom
