Is the zinc di or trivalent? The citrate ions molecular formula is C3H5O(COO)3

(3-), giving it a mass of 189 g per mole.

If it were trivalent zinc, then it woudl be a 1:1 ratio, in which case, the

Zn3+, (65.4 g / Mol) would contribute around 25% of the entire mass of Zinc

Citrate (254.4 g / Mol), in which case, 100g of ZnC3H5O(COO)3 would provide

around 25mg of Zinc (3+)

However, if it were divalent Zinc (Zn2+) (which it probably is) then it would

be a 3:2 ratio of Zinc: Citrate, in which case the zinc woudl contribute around

196.2 of the total 574.2 grams per mole of zinc citrate, or about 34 grams of

Zinc(2+) per 100g of Zinc Citrate........or so I think ;-D

To my understanding, the purpose of mineral citrate supplements is that they

are supposed to offer mildly superior absorbability. Because the citrate ion is

so damn big however, you end up being able to fit a lot less of it in a pill.

If it were just Zinc Citrate, then it wouldnt really be of significance, but

often people prefer calcium citrate due to its supposed superior absoirbaility,

but in a standard 1.2 g tablet of calcium citrate, you get only abut 250mg of

Calcium or so, and need to take about 4 to even get close to the RDA.

Alternatively, you could just take 2 tablets of Calcium Carbonate, each 1.2g

providing closer to 600mg of Calcium. Given the slightly lower absorbability,

youd probably be absorbing around about the same amount of total calcium from 2

calcium carbonate pills as what you would from 4 calcium citrate tablets - so

the whole citrate thing essentialyl defeats the purpose.

(Yeah, I know its best to get it from food, but some old buggers just refuse

to have calcium rich foods, so its either that or osteoporosis - so its the

lesser of the two evils)
