Guest guest
Christy, I would not be so quick to hug a doctor that is simply treating you r symptoms and not the cause. Synthroid will not make oyu well, and taking a fluid pill is a patch to cover the edema from low thyroid. You will be ion them for the rest of a shortened miserable life unless you get some REAL thyroid hormones in you. You need Armoru. I can tell you what is likely to happen... It is a sad scenario, but one I am personally familiar with. You WILL feel better for a while, then oyu will feel rotten again. You will spend YEARS like this adjusting the Synthroid and re-adjusting it, and finally she will tell you your thyroid is fine, you need to stop eating too much and get more exercize. At this point you won't be ABLE t exercize, and you will already be eating like a bird as you won't be able to handle many foods. Meantime you r heart will be weaker from the fluid retention, and you will have no will to live from the thyroid depression.I have been down this road and it took me 25 years of doctors and Synthroid and alomst dying form it to learn I needed Armoru Thyroid to get well. -- Artistic Grooming * Hurricane, WV My Ebay Jewelry Store http://stores.ebay.com/valeriescrystalcreations The BEST thyroid website! http://www.stopthethyroidmadness.com http://health.groups.yahoo.com/group/NaturalThyroidHormonesADRENALS/

Guest guest
Armour Thyroid is made form Pig's thyroids. It is the closest to matching our own hormones available. Guest guest
So how do I convince my Dr to put me on this instead??? I'm seeing a neurologist tomorrow for my wrists and will ask about testing for Lymes and Myalgia. The Dr today said she wanted to try the Synthroid first and it might take 6wks to work. How do I become educated and able to educate and convince my military Drs??? Please be gentle in responses, I'm at the end of my rope it seems. Christy > > Armour Thyroid is made form Pig's thyroids. Guest guest
Christy, Read the stop the thyroid madness site first. There are books on the site that are recommended reading; read one of those also. Dr. Starr's book comes to mind, altho I haven't read that one. As to educating your military docs. Well, you can try; but I wouldn't bet my life on it. best, Adria Green Mountain Curlies, Inc.~~~http://greenmountaincurlies.official.ws/ GMC Blog~~~http://greenmountaincurlies.blogspot.com The mind is not a vessel to be filled but a fire to be kindled. -- Plutarch So how do I convince my Dr to put me on this instead??? Guest guest
I'll try that site for a 3rd or 4th time, for some reason it doesn't make sense. Guest guest
Hi Christy, I understand being at the end of your rope and your in good company with the people here. It may not always be easy to " convince " a dr to prescribe Armour as the pharmacuetical companies have trained them to believe that synthetic is better and natural drugs are outdated. It's been said many times that usually the time you have to fight the hardest is the time you're at your worst---don't give up. I don't have any experience with military docs, hopefully they are easier to convince, but I have no idea. If your doc is not receptive, please don't feel stuck, there are other options. If you're having trouble with the stopthethyroidmadness website there is a lot of good info here in the FILES section at the left. It includes recommended reading too. A couple of books I found very useful so far where the Feeling Fat Fuzzy or Frazzled by Dr. Shames and Hormones Health and Happiness by Dr. Hotze. I also read Dr. Blanchard's book, " What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Hypothyroidism " . I didn't see that on the list here, but I personally recommend it. It is very easy to read and it talks a lot about Armour vs synthetic. I am fairly new to this myself so I have a lot more reading to do yet. Is there something in particular that is causing a problem at the stopthethyroidmadness site? We're here to help! -Connie > > I'll try that site for a 3rd or 4th time, for some reason it doesn't > make sense. > Christy > >
Guest guest
Thanks for the warm response Connie. In my experience the military health system is a nightmare. I don't think they've heard of the " do no harm " clause, just the " do the minimal to get by " clause. My Uncle is a prior Army OBGYN so I'm not unwarrantedly bashing here. The really bad part is that we have to see a different Dr each time cause they transfer so often. The PA I'm seeing now is a civilian, contracted to work in the military health clinic. I gave her a hug cause I feel like she cares since she is the first to ever remember who I am and she's actually read and studied my medical records from years back. I feel comfortable that she's receptive to my questions. I'll try to read more. I've just been so exhausted lately. I did train as an EMT so it has frustrated me that I haven't figured this thyroid thing out by now. Chat more later Christy > > > > I'll try that site for a 3rd or 4th time, for some reason it > doesn't > > make sense. > > Christy > > > > >
Guest guest
Hi Christy, That's about what I've heard with military docs, though didn't want to be too discouraging. Too bad there's no continuity there either, you could use it. I am sure in some ways you have a great doc for some things, I don't think it's necesssarily her fault that she doesn't know about thyroid, docs are simply not being taught the right things to look for and how to treat correctly. I've had similar experiences. There are a lot of doctors who mean well while in the meantime will kill you. I completely understand you wanting to hug your new doctor. At least she's got the right approach to LISTEN to you and CARE, that in itself can be very hard to find. Just someone who will hear your symptoms and try to find a cause and not just dismiss you like you're crazy, can bring such a great deal of HOPE. Just don't let it be false hope. Educate yourself. Maybe you can " train " her in this area if she's receptive (sounds like she might be). If not, like I said there are other options. And, I know it can probably seem like bursting your bubble to hear the truth about things when you feel like you finally found a doctor who seems to care and wants to make progress(FINALLY). Be thankful that people here will tell it like it is so you can know the truth about thyroid and the devastating consequences of listening to the docs on this particular subject. It can save your life! And while I understand where you're coming from, give yourself a break about training as an EMT and not being able to figure this out yet. Thyroid problems are complex and can mask themselves in many ways. It can take a long time for anyone to figure out. You're on the right track now and that's what matters. Keep reading as you can. I know it's hard when you're exhausted or simply can't focus. Just hang in there! -Connie > > > > > > I'll try that site for a 3rd or 4th time, for some reason it > > doesn't > > > make sense. > > > Christy > > > > > > > > >
Guest guest
Hey Christie, I, too, go the military route. I did the Synthroid thing for 2 1/2 yrs... nd I don't think I ever got out of the under-treated catagory. I would recommend that you read what you can and take someone with you to the doc. I know when I am feeling hypo, it is real easy to talk around me and I don't question or argue... The doc I have now wanted to try Synthroid one more time, but it didn't help me, so he let me switch to Armour... There is plenty in the files section.. As someone else already pointed out www.stopthethyroidmadness.com also www.thyroid.about.com Read as much as you can. And I have found that if I walk in and the doc doesn't have a clue, I don't go back... check out another doc in the clinic. I was told initially, when I was begging for a higher dose, because I had a brief period of wellness that only lasted a week, that there are other meds available but docs think that the effect is pacebo.. and she wouldn't pursue it. (I didn't know about Armour at the time) I have spoken with a few other military docs who think that the effects of Armour are placebo... and that it isn't regulated well... or it is too hard to regulate... be prepared to counter their arguments. It's only been in the last year that I have learned more and pressed the issue... I do hope this doc continues to take care of your needs. At the same time, learn what you can to discuss and show why you need what you need... Good luck and ... Never Give Up! jacqueline Incidentally, what is up with your wrists?... could it be another thyroid symptom? =========================================================== > So how do I convince my Dr to put me on this instead???
