He's on Risperdol, Zoloft (for obsessions) and clonodine....Terry tried the

clonodine as soon as he got home today...he's still obsessed, but at least

not wrecking anything....yet.....today. Yes, we can see them coming...we've

tried walks around the block, bikes, going outside....watching t.v. whatever

he is obsessed with is what he wants...nothing else works...right now as I

write it's " Sams goes to K-Mart. "

No butcher knives though.....we are exploring the BP possibility. His

behavior reminds me of that 20/20 segment on bi-polar kids who were violent

with their family.

I don't know what the answer is right now...apparently neither do the docs or

they would have one. Gee...I know, more drugs....what a way to live...both

for us and poor Sam. It can't be any fun for him.

Feeling like I'm loosing the battle again....

We're trying to head off the obessive part of the day...obviously we haven't

figured it out yet...In the mornings, Sam gets up with me..usually about

5-5:30...and he is the sweetest boy, most loving boy you would ever want to

meet. " Hi daddy, " he usually says, " I love you daddy, " is another common

greeting. I get him his juice and he'll ask very sweetly, " Peanut butter

toast daddy? " I usually get a kiss for that.

Terry gets him and Abbie ready for school as I bring Alec then get my crew

ready and pointed in the right direction for work.

His days consist of pretty good to mixed at school. I forgot the

Ritalin...he's takes Ritalin 3x per day. Since the Ritalin, his behavior has

improved at school.

When he gets home is when the obsession starts. I have occasionaly been home

for the bus to drop him off and he is still very loving, even to the point of

holding Abbie's hand down the driveway into the house. He slowly starts

obesessing a bit later on and this can last till he goes to sleep....

He will obsess about Toys R Us to " go bye bye see Nanny and Poppy " to K-Mart

to go outside to whatever. It's like he can't live in his own skin and can't

take no for an answer.

Anyway, we don't know what to do...we can't live at K-Mart or outside. I'm

truly wondering if this is chemical/behavioral mix. I do know we need some

help...I just don't know what kind.

The nurse at the docs office suggested respite...we get respite...Sam needs

help god damn it!!!!

Anyway...he's quiet now...yeah I broke down after 4 hours and took him to

Toys R Us...

Wow Salli, you are up there with me! ;-)

We have 6 TVs, only 3 VCRs right now and 3 game systems, 1 DVD player. This

is one area I have REFUSED to budge!!! I do not have a TV in my room. This

is one of the big factors luring to his room now. He has a tv and

vcr in there. AND I WON;T LET HIM MOVE IT IN TO MY ROOM! I am SO mean!!!

Ha ha!

Anyway, just thought again, great minds think alike, right?

Oh, I just remembered back when was 18 months old, he put a marble in

the vcr! :-o

I was surprised! I told him now it won't work. We had to wait for Mike to

come home and open it up and remove the marble....so that was my excuse for

making him wait. And it worked!!! I'm pretty sure that it was coincidence

that it worked. Nothing else works like that for proving lessons with .

Ron and Terry too,

Meds are NOT the worst thing in the world. Some kids have to have massive

amounts of meds everyday just to live. Every kid I know of on the neph_kids

list has had to take massive amounts of drugs at some point -- including my

own son, Dillon. Those who undergo transplant will have to take meds for the

rest of their lives to prevent rejection. These are toxic drugs that do

terrible things to these kids after many years. Most of those kids also have

some form of PDD too. I hated giving Dillon (a once healthy child) a drug

that had the effects that high-dose prednisone and solumedrol had on him.

Everybody hates giving meds. I intend to put it off for as long as possible

(hopefully never have to). But if there is no other way, please don't feel

guilty about it. You are both wonderful parents!!!

No you're not losing the battle! It's just another bump in the road.

Ron:

Regarding the VCRs, I cannot tell you how many we went through when Putter

was three and four. I would buy them on sale and always get extended

warranties because we would take them in for repairs every few weeks. I had

seven, after I finally wised up, that I would rotate and finally when I had

six broken, I would take them all in and hope that they would come back

repaired before our last VCR needed repair. For if Putter had no VCR, well,

let's just say, I would have bought another one.

We bought our VCRs from Circuit City and the first couple of times we

brought it in for repairs they replaced the VCR as a bad one, but after a

bit they quit believing that. The repairmen used to call me up to explain

all the things I must do to prevent it from happening again. I avoided

those calls; I was glad I had caller ID. Finally Circuit City STOPPED our

extended warranty saying that there was a limit to how many times you could

repair something under it. I didn't know if it was true or not because I

had lost all my warranty paperwork anyway (I always do). And I did feel a

trifle guilty as I knew perfectly well that Putter was awful with videos and

it was because of him that our VCRs constantly needed repairs. But I never

admitted it.

We bought a DVD player solely because there were no heads for Putter to

ruin. However, Putter loves DVDs and eventually manages to ruin most of

them and they are more expensive than videos so we only buy non-little kid

stuff on DVD and we keep them up high. For the record we have 5 televisions

and four working VCRs plus the DVD player.

I began to think I needed a new sucker, besides Circuit City, to sell me

extended warranties for my VCR purchases when the problem abruptly

disappeared. Putter just got better about it. He was less likely to take

videos out and jump on them; he was less likely to play with the videos, and

throw them around. It has been months and months since I took a VCR in for

repairs. Thank Goodness.

However the other night I discovered an ice cream sandwich melting happily

inside the VCR in my room. I unplugged it and cleaned it very carefully and

no problem resulted. I also found a Playmobil doll inside the same VCR.

But Putter is innocent. Robbie is up to some new tricks.

4 TVs, 3 VCRs, 2 computers, 3 computers if you count the non-y2k compliant

(ancient) Mac,1 DVD, 2 (working) turntables, 1 200-CD disk changer 1000 Cds,

6000 LPs, 4 electric guitars, 2 acoustic guitars and one church organ we

picked up at a church yard sale last week for $50. Boone immediately treated

us to his rendition of Elmo's Song (lalalala) on the new organ. He is

driving us insane.

Ron and Terry,

It may be just a matter of trying a different SSRI. Even though there are

four different ones, they work a bit differently. The Paxil is

taking really calmed his obsessive behaviors. We tried to wean him off and

switch him to Buspar for anxiety, but the obsessive came back and he was

very unhappy! Back to Paxil for now!!

Good luck to you both!!
