Just as an FYI. . .10 - 13 years ago when I worked part-time per diem in

hospitals the going rate was about 35/hour. That was on the East Coast.

Part-time hourly rates?

Just wondering, what is a fair rate to negotiate when moving from full

time to part time? What is the current part-time rate in a hospital?

Thanks,

I worked pretty much all over S Jersey and Philadelphia. . . From Cape May

to Mays Landing and Cherry Hills, Philadelphia and Camden to Trenton. . .

and even one temp job in Orange County NJ - N. NJ

It might be worth repeating. . . I interviewed with a company that ran the

health services at a local prison in South Jersey. . . When I quoted a rate of

$35/hour, the guy said, " Why should I pay that? I have dietitians willing to

work for $12/hour. . . I kindly said, " Well, you get what you pay for . . .

If/when you want to use our services, give me a call and left the interview. "

3 weeks later I was hired - at $35/hour. That was over 10 years ago!

Pay IS negotiable!

PS. By the way, locally maids/housekeepers make $20-25 per hour/cash - no

benefits . . . Why would anybody with a 4/6 year college degree accept a job

for 18/hour???

It is part-time with some benefits in Chicago. I have

2 years of experience.

Yeah per-diem pays well- Our hospital pays $32/hr. But

you don't have many hours. Part-time is more fixed

number of hours. I'll be working 26 hrs.

Any suggestions.

That pay is for both full and part timers. Yes our most senior Red's are not

making over $30 I know and that is with years of experience. Our hospital has

never paid for dues though have been asked. We work in Providence RI but Boston

is pretty similar I hear. I think there are more people than jobs sometimes and

they hire lost of new RD's out of internships/school.

I spoke with this outfit a couple of months ago. $25 is consulting rate for

hours spent doing the inspections. The time involved in driving to the

establishments to be inspected isn't compensated! They do pay 65 cents per

mile to drive, but that doesn't work out well for intown trips that are few

miles but much time spent in traffic. I didn't think it worked out well

enough to drive 6 hours north to do a couple of inspections.

Sometimes people have to settle in order to work! I was offered a full-time

job at $19/hour 4 years ago. I have an MEd and 20+ years of experience. I

asked for $25 and they countered with $20/hr. Had I not had another offer I

would have had to take it. My husband was out of work and I was desperate.

We had been without an income for 2 years. The job I took wasn't much

higher in pay, but over 4 years my consulting rate has doubled. Each time

my contract negotiations have come up I have pushed for a large raise.

Since I proved myself I have gotten what I asked for each year.

While I agree with all of you that we should push harder for higher wages,

sometimes pushing doesn't work and people have to settle or go hungry.

I just saw an online ad for per diem at a hospital in Maine. It stated the

rate was 10% higher than the full-time rate in lieu of benefits. If there

are benefits with a part-time position I don't think a pay raise would be

given around here. But, do try for more. All they can do is say no and

they might just say yes.

Life circumstances are a whole different story. $19/hr was not a bad rate 4

years ago.

and you are right, many times, especially in today's economy, you settle for

less.

The rates I gave are for NYC and they, I assume, the highest or among the

highest in the nation.

See the last report from labor department - national average for wages:

Someone was explaining to me about their great health plan (in today's world it

is). My husband and I are both self-employed so we have to pay our own health

insurance and fully fund our retirement, no paid vacation, full FICA,etc., etc.

and I think some individuals forget that. Add that all up and that can add

quite a few $ to your pay...it just doesn't show up on the paycheck.

For example if someone is employed and they have to pay $300/month towards their

family health plan but the next person has to pay nothing that will add about

$1.90 to the hourly rate for the person who doesn't have to pay anything...

I consider $19/hr 4 years ago to be a poor rate especially as I wasn't right

out of school. Eight years ago I was earning $21.50/hr at a part-time job.

Both jobs were in southern Maine.

This is so refreshing to discuss area wages. Sometimes on the other list serve

you sit there wondering am I below/above average pay? It's good to see dollar

amts. just as points of references. It's like trying to lower blood sugar

without doing daily acu-checks. It's pretty hard to gauge where you are.

Part-time hourly rates?

Just wondering, what is a fair rate to negotiate when moving from full

time to part time? What is the current part-time rate in a hospital?

At least he doesn't have, I assume, to support a family (yet) with these rates.

Teenagers are paid less, and especially in this industry. And maybe that's the

reason these industry is one of the lowest pays, since teenagers are the

majority of the workers, unless we talk higher level managemnets. The good news

- if he stays there, he might become, one day, a manger or even own one of the

restaurants he is working for. Then the bigger money comes. Obviously, he didn't

need any college degree for that job.

Not a bad start for 18! I think the point was that he was not too far
