Melatonin first -- which we've had great success with -- then Benedryl.

When those didn't work I used our script for chloryl hydrate. (She gave the

OK to mix these.) I have asked our ped about using other things but this is

the med she's familiar with. She said if it doesn't work she will call some

specialists & ask their advice...but it does work. This is the first time

I've used it to get him to sleep, tho I have given him half a dose a couple

of times when he woke in the middle of the night.

I asked her specifically about Ambien, & she looked it up & agreed it

sounded like a good med for him, but there was no pediatric dose given so

she was not comfortable giving us that.

What is trazadone?

What other meds are there? Should I try to find a better med for him, or

stick with this since it worked? It knocked him right out and he slept very

well. Soundly, but he dreamed, and not so deep I couldn't wake him, so I

think it's the right dose for him. What do you think? I don't know what

I'm doing here...

Sara,

What did you give him? If you dont mind my asking. There are lots

of options for medications and herbal supplements for helping qwith

sleep. I have 2 kids who dont sleep very well. Greggory is the better

of the 2 and we give him melotonin to help him fall asleep. It doesnt

keep him asleep though and so he does still wake up but he will fall

right back to sleep in our bed and then we carry him back. This can

happen 4 or more times a night though and so I will be talking to the

dr about this. Alec is taking trazadone to help him sleep. Seems to

work for him. He fell asleep about 25 minutes after taking it and

slept all night! Thank god!

If something might work better, or was generally a safer med. Chloryl

hydrate is a pretty heavy-duty sedative. It's what they give kids before an

MRI or serious dental work. He's on a very light dose & does not appear to

have any side effects from it, though one possible effect is stomach pain or

headache & I don't think I'd know if he had those.

Mikey just turned 2 so I don't think he is old enough to try the other kinds

of meds like you mentioned. My friend's 4 year old is on...prozac I

think... & it has worked wonders for him. We'll consider it when he's a

little older.

I like the child psychiatrist idea. That's a good one. We are seeing a

psychologist...I could ask my ped to confer w/a p-iatrist on the med issue,

I bet she would do that. But then again...it works & he has no side

effects...should we change? I don't know. I hate this.

Oh and it tastes frigging awful. You are supposed to mix it with a full

glass of jiuce or milk. This child doesn't drink a full glass of anything

all day. I have been mixing it with stevia (a natural sugar alternative)

and getting it to taste like bad cough syrup, which is a great improvement.

I'm thinking about trying it in a little pop...he loves pop but he can't

have the sugar...he acts just awful on sugar but if it's going to knock him

out....anyway I'm rambling.

Thanks much.

-Sara.

Does that sound familiar or what? Maybe that is why has such a

hard time going to sleep. He has nights where he stays awake till 2

or 3 in the morning!!!

Don't feel bad about drugging him unless you do it every night, but I

would talk to your Dr's about his lack of ability in falling asleep

on his own. 's will be addressed when he goes to the psych.

Childrens NyQuil is one of my best friends!!!

Sara,

if it works and you are comfortable with it then I don't see why

you would change. Keep an eye out for side effects(I know you are)

You are lucky to have ped who is so easy to work with. My husband

takes ambien right now. Works great for him. We decided to try

trazadone because we are trying to kill 2 birds with one astone.

First of all let me say we are going to a child psychiatrist. He is

the one helping use decide what meds to try. We also work with our

family dr(who is fabulous!) and he also helps with suggestions. These

drs work great together. Trazadone is a serotonin uptake inhibitor.

(antidepressant) It has the great side effect of sleep. We were

looking for something that might help Alec settle down durring the

day and focus. He is also on risperdal. Clonidine worked very well

for a while for sleep. But then it didnt work at all. Alec has a

super tolerance for drugs. The risperdal was suposed to help him

sleep as well but it didnt do a thing! We also tried benedryl but

that didnt work a lick! My husband was passed out at half the amount

we gave Alec. What is the medicine you gave ? Whats it for? Is it

for sleep or is it a side effect you are using it for? Just

wondering:)

Alec was only 18 months when we put him on clonidine. Its pretty

safe. A blood pressure medication. Really helped him alot. I couldnt

get anything down alec that tasted bad. He would vomit it ro spit it

out! Is it a liquid or a pill? Alec is 3.5 yrs right now and we just

started the new drugs about a month or so ago. Maybe a Psych would

have a better idea. There are lots of drugs that give sedation as a

safe side effect. And most child psyhc use some drugs that werent

designed for children. Its their specialty! :) It helps to have a dr

who is familar with unfamilar things:)

I know nothing about melatonin, Sara, but maybe if this is helping

him sleep thru the night it will help his body stay on a schedule so

even if he wakes up, his body will know to go back to sleep?

I don't know, just guessing.
