It appears that rarely do any 2 people here react the same way to any particular medicine, diet or exercise but generally most of us can't handle a lot of carbs without our blood sugar (bg's) readings going up too far. Personally, I've found that low carbs and medium protein works for me. I've lost 42 pounds, stabilized my weight, and gone off Amaryl as a result of the diet control and 3 miles a day on my treadmill. I tested about 7 times a day until I understood the relationship between different food combinations/ exercise and my bg numbers. I now test 7 times a week using a Bayer Glucometer Elite. Good luck and good to have you with us...

That's what I was thinking. That it almost makes more sense for us to find out what works for us rather than let a dietician tell us. I may start reducing my carbs gradually and see what it does. > Personally, I've found that low carbs and medium protein works for me. I've lost about 40 lbs. as well but it seems to have stalled there and I have more I could lose. > I tested about 7 times a day until I understood the relationship between > different food combinations/ exercise and my bg numbers. I now test 7 times > a week using a Bayer Glucometer Elite. Do you test at different times during the day? My doctor said I only had to test 2 or 3 times a week, which didn't seem like enough to me. A friend who's been diabetic for about 25 years said if I don't test often, then a fasting one is the best cuz it lets you know how you're starting the day. I usually test in the morning and a couple times a week at work at various times. > Good luck and good to have you with us... Thanks again. That it would lead to cravings and an eventual return to bad habits. She said if you want to eat something " bad " (my word) just plan ahead by offsetting it with protein and exercise. Trips to Outback Steakhouse for steak, baked potato, potato soup and salad are followed by 38 minutes on the treadmill at 4.5 mph as soon as I can get home... Usually right away. I also love no sugar added Klondike bars and allow myself one a day (usually the highlight of the day)..<G> > <<<That's great that you've been able to get off medication. I feel better now at 52 yrs old than I have in about the past 15 years. <<<Do you test at different times during the day? Take care Annette and I think you'll find caring compassionate people here that are always willing to help each other. And very knowledgeable too... Guest guest
Hi Group, I just sorta wanted to get some feedback on this. I try to start the morning off with an aerobic tape and I do it for 30-40 minutes then late afternoon or early evening I do the tape again. Do ya'll think this is enough exercise,if I don't go walk or do you think I still need to walk too?
Guest guest
Hi Gail, How long have you been doing this much exercise? I started out just doing part of the tape once a day and walking some. We have recently had a very bad thing happen at the beach and they have not caught the last person involved,so I am hesitant to walk until it is really resolved.Yes I agree about taking a day off but I have so much more energy that its just wonderful

Haven't had a doughnut or chocolate bar here either, now that you mention it, but every Friday is doughnut day at work and I do have to fight the temptation. <<..no sugar added Klondike bars...>> > <<<I got some of those too but I only have them on really hot days, > if/when I think of it. Spent the next 2 weeks wolfing down water, tea and soft drinks... Went to the doctor because a sinus infection I'd returned with wasn't getting any better on meds but I had a giant Dr. Pepper on the way to his office. When he suspected diabetes and checked the bg it was 436 (on 1/4/99). Vision was temporarily shot. 52 yrs old, started at 232 pounds, was on Amaryl but stopped at 217 pounds. Currently at 189 but I check and record weight daily...just so I don't feel I can cheat without noticing the weight. Bg's run 90-120. Went to the doc yesterday for a 3 month check and he said the 5.7 A1C was great. Both of my parents were orphans so I don't know about DM in the family but they didn't have it. <<<No one's mentioned to me about testing lunch and dinner? Should it be low then or fairly normal?>>> I generally test 85-90 before a meal and 110-120 2 hrs afterward. I usually have a 85-90 immediately after exercising (right after dinner). <<<I have no doubt of that. I'm surprised I didn't think of looking for a place like this sooner.>>> I like it because no one hogs all the messages and this tends not to be political with people on witch-hunts. And there are several people here who've studied a lot and know their stuff.. Take care Annette..

(g) Sorry, couldn't resist. I would think that would be plenty. My doctor cautioned me against doing any exercise lasting longer than 40 minutes at one time. Guest guest
Hi , I also do a lot of exercise. I walk 45 just about everyday and sometimes more except for one. I go to aerobics 2 nights a week in the summer and 3 nights in the winter and ride my bike when I can. I don't think there is such a thing as too much exercise not for me anyway. I ususally do like to take 1 day off for a rest day. I think you need that. But all this exercise is starting to pay of. I am starting to lose weight and it helps keep my bg levels under tight control. Gail VPolzin@... wrote: > From: VPolzin@... > > Hi Group, > I just sorta wanted to get some feedback on this. Guest guest
Walking really energizes me and makes me feel so good. I have some respiratory problems so work out for at least an hour twice a week. I spend 30 minutes on the treadmill as I don't have a good level place to walk outside nor a mall closeby. Thirty minutes should be enough to get your heart rate up. Lot of time I'll take a longer way home, go 3 or 4 blocks out of my way. And I do have a gravity rider that I use in the winter because I can't walk it in the winter. > Haven't had a doughnut or chocolate bar here either, now that you mention > it, but every Friday is doughnut day at work and I do have to fight the > temptation. I'm lucky at work because there's just me and my boss and he's borderline diabetic so getting time off to go to the doctor's or for tests isn't a problem. Also neither one of us is bringing in sweets and that helps. > Uh oh.. I contributing to your delinquency. Yes. It's all your fault. But it was yummy. > I went back to Virginia on 12/17/98 for Christmas and arrived dying of > thirst. So it sounds like you've done quite well since then. > 52 yrs old, started at 232 pounds, was on Amaryl but stopped at 217 pounds. > Currently at 189 but I check and record weight daily...just so I don't feel > I can cheat without noticing the weight. Bg's run 90-120. I only weigh myself about once a week. I haven't gone up but I haven't lost any in a couple months. I had been wanting to lose weight for years. Looks like I just needed the right incentive. If the consequences of not taking care of your diabetes doesn't make you change your ways, I don't think anything will. > Went to the doc yesterday for a 3 month check and he said the 5.7 A1C was > great. Nothing like getting it from the horse's mouth, so to speak. TTYL, Annette
Guest guest
And for those who think walking on a treadmill is so BORRRING (which it is) I get books on tape from the library and play on my Walkman. Helps make the time really fly! I do a half hour three times a week on treadmill at gym and a walk outside on other days; also enjoy book on tape then!
