Craig, you are in the right place. Right now the group has been pretty

quiet for cirrhosis and transplant discussions. We are like a family, so we

like to get to know each other when things are quiet if you have been

reading the emails for a couple of days before you posted. It is great that

you have been able to improve your situation. The last question we had on

here had to do with reversal. It is very unusual. Not sure what the stats

are for 19 to start with. The only thing I am doing as far as treatment is

cutting down on protein, limiting tylenol and considering my liver when I

have to treat my other conditions. I have not had to take anything for

hepatic encephology yet. Some people who know me would probably think I

should be though. [?]I was diagnosed about 9 or 10 years ago. I do not

qualify for transplant because of my age and other medical conditions.

Welcome to the group. Jan H

OK, I'm new here but does this group have anything to do with Cirrhosis?

I got diagnosed 14 months ago with ESLD and have been as far as transplant eval.

Due to my own research I have managed to get my meld from 19 down to 6 and now

have no symptoms of cirrhosis (alcoholic) at all.

I have a passionate interest in this disease, which is why I am always trying to

interact with people who are living with the disease and researching different

ways of treating the disease. I am also currently writing a book based on my

experiences with cirrhosis.

Have I joined the wrong group?

Not sure if I'm allowed to post this here but I have a web site which has a lot

of information on all aspects of liver disease...it is not a chat site.

Welcome Craig. You are definitely in the right place. This group of people are

very knowledgeable about this disease. My name is Penny. I have Hepatitis C

that caused cirrhosis, and I had a liver transplant on 1/6/08. I also did the

treatment for Hepatitis C after the transplant, and am now undetectable for it.

Feel free to ask questions. Someone will probably know the answer.

Craig

Personally, I don't think you have joined the wrong group at all!! I find it

very interesting that you were able to get your meld so far down (even if I

don't know what it means) and you have no symptoms of cirrhosis???

Gloria,

You may find this useful.....

How is the severity of cirrhosis measured?

The model for end-stage liver disease (MELD) score measures the severity of

cirrhosis. The MELD score was developed to predict the 90-day survival of people

with advanced cirrhosis. The MELD score is based on three blood tests:

international normalized ratio (INR)—tests the clotting tendency of blood

bilirubin—tests the amount of bile pigment in the blood

creatinine—tests kidney function

MELD scores usually range between 6 and 40, with a score of 6 indicating the

best likelihood of 90-day survival.

You can find a MELD score calculator at:

http://www.unos.org/resources/MeldPeldCalculator.asp?index=98

In most states (not CA) your meld has to be around 15 to make the transplant

list, a score of 20+ means you need a transplant, 30 and above you probably

aren't going to make it.

Some people use the Child-Pugh system which bases seriousness on classes of A, B

or C. 'A' being the least serious, 'C' being the most serious.

I hope this helps.
