Unless his “something more important”

includes bringing in food or cash, he should help you (IMHO) – he can hand out

VIS forms and get the consent forms signed while you poke everyone J

" Hire for attitude, train for skills. "

If it took hours to show him how to handle a normal mammo, you need to fire him

and find someone else. It's easier to do it yourself than to get an

uncooperative employee to do it. Great employees will figure out how to do the

job better. Bad ones can ruin your practice. It happened to me.

Hiring the right people is hard. It helps to pay top $ and justify it by making

sure they make you more productive. Management gurus say an average employee is

3-9x as productive as a poor one, and a great employee is 3-9x as productive as

an average one. So it pays to hire the best. Always check references.

I once had an office assistant who spent hours spinning his chair one way, and

then the other, while all around him there was work to be done.... you can't

make this stuff up.

There are, unfortunately, lots of lazy and malicious people out there. Great

employees tend to stay in great jobs for a long time, so unfortunately many job

openings and job applicants have some problem......

Fortunately, with the recession, a lot of good people are out of work for no

fault of their own and are looking. Don't settle for a poor to mediocre

employee. Let him go and try again!

I am pretty sure  Ken is not malicious..but thanks for the pointers, I especially like you judge " psychopaths by data " I am fresh from 2 disastrous hires, its been very educational to say the least...  but no chair spinning

mostly one hire who was intimately familiar with prescription drug fraud and another   who doesn't know how  to say no, so packs my schedule ( because " she can only come in right now " , cannot collect copays " but she doesn't have the money "  and amplifies patient anxieties- nice but oh so stressful)

Or maybe it's wiser not to divide the family and truly find a new MA as I found out the hard way that working with my husband was not a good idea. This was years ago before he passed of a heart attack at 41 but it was a lesson well learned.

Hadn't seen this before the other one!

Yes, I have two volunteers and I too have realized I have to communicate differently for them to understand what I wanted and that don't have a crystal ball to my criptic notes on EOB's ect. Nor do they always tell me what they did or why and figure I won't need it till next week when they come back!

Good luck Jean!
