But it would make sense, wouldn't it, if the school system taught the French

that was being spoken close to where you live doesn't it??? Even in France they

have different dialects of the spoken French.

I have a client that is Spanish and her husband was Portuguese. They lived

right across the river from each other over there and there was a bridge. So

the towns up and down the borders, including their's, incorporated both the

Spanish and Portuguese. They even have a name for the language, which I can't

recall right now.

Up here, our kids do still have to learn a second language. Mostly it'll be

French and I found it to be a huge waste of time. They only teach Parisian

French, particularly out on the west coast here, therefore, we can't understand

anyone from Quebec or the rest of our French population further east. I've known

of several Quebecers living out here that will not allow their children to go to

French Immersion schools because of the French that is taught.

In the end, my mother was right!! I should have gone to the High School that was

teaching Spanish. It sure would have been a lot more useful.

Good for you about the Apache speaking. I always wanted to learn to speak

Norwegian, but it wasn't spoken around me starting about the time I started

school, so didn't learn it that way. My mother didn't speak it since before

she started school, my dad wasn't in the house much when I was home and

awake. I could have gone to St. Olaf College, I think they still teach it

there, but was more expensive than Augustana, so that settled that. Now, I

can't remember how to spell English words, at least on a keyboard (you are

lucky I proof and sometimes spell check these posts or you would have

trouble figuring some out) , so can't imagine trying to learn Norwegian.

Had to work hard at what I did learn of Spanish. I wish our school kids

were required to learn a second language as they are in Europe. Some learn

two, start one, usually English, in grade school and a third in

highschool. Jan H

And if you make a mistake on the dialect, it can be embarrassing. I was at

a Spanish Club party at the home of our Spanish teacher, and all the Spanish

speaking exchange students in town had been invited. We were making pop

corn and some one translated " old maid " meaning unpopped kernel into

Spanish. Another student was irate because in his dialect that was a cuss

word. Jan H

Oh my gosh..I'd say too funny, but maybe it wasn't funny at the time! How

confusing!

And if you make a mistake on the dialect, it can be embarrassing. I was at

a Spanish Club party at the home of our Spanish teacher, and all the Spanish

speaking exchange students in town had been invited. We were making pop

corn and some one translated " old maid " meaning unpopped kernel into

Spanish. Another student was irate because in his dialect that was a cuss

word. Jan H

Surprising!!

The Spanish client went to Mexico with her son and never mentioned if she had

difficulty with the Mexican dialect.

If you have ancestry of any of the five civilized tribes whom were removed from

thier homlands by to Oklahoma, well, the families' names were all

written down. This is why there are so many anglo looking Cherokees and Creeks,

and Chocktaws and Chickasaw and Seminole who are " legal Indians " .. Many native

people cannot trace any lineage for a variety of reasons, but my ex wife wrote

to the Cherokee tribe in Okalahoma, and requested citizenshipn in the tribe

based on her Grandma's blood. The tribe accepted her and my daughter in to the

tribe. My daughter used her federal Indian card to get her drivers licence! She

went to Fort , a largly Indian college down in Durango for free tuition,

and said " dad, I dont feel indian, and these people are REAL indians! I told her

" dont worry, hun you are a real indian too.

Bobby

I know a few First Nations people here, that their ancestry is very apparent;

but, if they can't get the names of their grandparents they are SOL for status.

Yet, I know a lot of those blond, blue-eyed Metis especially.

My husband has not really had much interest in his own native background (just

because he wasn't looking for a free ride); but, a number of his sibs etc. have

done some searching. I know his son was doing a search too, if only to help the

grandson obtain a free education. Personally, I am opposed to that!! Hubby's

native background is something like 1/16th, so why would his grandson, who would

be a lot lower down the totem pole be able to qualify for free post secondary??

That's not what the Education Fund was set up to do at all and it's like taking

advantage. I have also said - if it did indeed become possible for my grandson,

then why shouldn't my son qualify as a step-son???

There is unfortunately, one certain thing on my side!! The only way I could

have any native blood, is if a buck or two rowed their canoe across the Atlantic

and got mixed up with my family. However, I trust that those prejudiced days

are long gone and the no matter what tribe anyone is from in all of North

America - someone hopefully is still teaching the old ways and the old language.

My mom's dad was named , a long time alcoholic who was half apache and

half Spanish. Her mom was full blooded Spanish, and her Grandma's sisters were

blond hair blue eyes. The blond sisters were allowed to go in the theatre

the 1950's.

My father's dad was half Navajo, and half spanish settler. His mom was mostly

Spanish. They were originally from Taos New Mexico. somewhere along the way they

migrated north to Trinidad, Colorado. In the 60's , my dad's entire family

eventually moved north to Colorado Springs and on to Denver.

Then my dad met my mom. I learned to speak Apache in 1995.

No no not at all. The southern Athapaskan people (Apache, Navajo) are nearly

indistinguishable from the people they now live in proximity to. They adapt

completely to thier surroundings. A Mescalero would dress like a southern

Cheyenne, a Jicarilla ( my lineage) would dress like a Pawnee or Lakota, a

Navajo would dress like a Colorado river Indian, such as Maricopa or Pima. The

Jicarilla people look just like plains Indians from the mocassins to thier bead

work. The thng that still links us to Canada is the language. Athapaskan is

still spoken up there and down here. The Athapaskans of the Southwest can

actually understand some words used by Indians of British Columbia, the

Sekani, Beaver, r, Slave and Chippewyan.

it? A dear friend that just passed away this year worked for several years

between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktut. His wife would make the whole family's

parkas....

Bobby - I read that article, very interesting. Made me wonder about some

things. Maybe about 50 years ago or so, they started talking about the

theory that American Indians were actually Asians, that they had crossed the

land bridge between Asia and what is now Alaska. And then some groups

migrated across Canada and the US and down into South America. Most of the

reaction from the Indians that I heard at the time was negative. They

claimed they had always been where they were, except for those who had been

moved by the white man which included most Indians in the east. Yet, that

article talks about the migration for the Apache and Navajo tribes from

Canada to Arizona and New Mexico. I would be interested in hearing your

reaction to what I have written. How do you and other Indians you know feel

about the theory? Jan H

It is all a fascinating research subject!!

I can usually tell the difference especially say between our Coast Salish and

the people of Manitoba, Saskatchewan etc. I believe that there is quite a

difference between even our Coast Salish and the Haida's from further up the

coast on mainly the Queen Charlotte Islands that are just under Alaska.

You know the questions I had about that theory???

Why was it that they had to come up with a theory like that and not just accept

that the Native People have always been here? What about the peoples of Central

and South America as well? They have a very similar look to our Natives.

Finally though, are those theorists suggesting something like that because of

the biblical belief of how man was created??

I don't remember if it was based on the biblical belief that man started in

one place and after the jews were driven out of Israel they scattered to all

the earth. But it would fit in with that. I was married to a Bohunk and I

was surprised by the similarity of some of the foods to the ones I grew up

with in my Norwegian community. And they have traced all languages to no

more than three roots all coming out of Western Asia. It makes you think.

There is no reason they couldn't have migrated into South America too. Jan

Jill, I lived with a lot of confusing feelings. To know that my ancestors

(Spanish against natives) so brutalized each other is a sobering thought. The

Spanish settlers of New Mexico were given no quarter by the Apache and Navajo,

and even the Apache and Navajo made an art form of warring with each other. If

you go to a modern pow wow, and eaves drop, you will still get a good feeling

for the animosity that still exists to this day. I was asked to teach different

Indian children from several local tribes the skill of bow and arrow making, and

thier parents looked at me like I was from Mars. I found out later it was

because the Northern Arapaho and Pawnee, Sioux, and others were attacked by the

eastern Apache often only one hundred fifty years ago. They still harbor a lot

of grudge, and it is no joke. I felt like thier anger was directed right at me

and boy was that a mix of strange feelings, including a strange sense of pride.

In fact, among all of the Indians I have met at traditional events such as pow

wows, there is far far more distrust between the tribes and nations than I would

have ever thought.

It felt kind of like when we visited Fort Union ruins in New Mexico. To think

that they had gone to the trouble of building this huge fort- boy , they must

have been really scared. I know I would have been. The women went insane because

of the oppresive heat and bugs and constant threat of Indian attack.

One of my favorite stories is of a raid against the Kiowa east of Springer New

Mexico just before the turn of the century- The Jicarillas crept in after dusk

after walking hundreds of miles on foot, and stole every horse, leaving their

mocassins tied to their lances (spears) stuck in the ground.

What an insult that must have been! As if to say " you rode, we walked, now we

ride, you walk! "

I try to think of the entire experience of history as a whole instead of pieces

and parts. The best thing I think we all can do is teach our heritage to our

young, be them Norwegian, French or Apache or whatever.

We are all related anyway.

Love, Bobby

I think that it is silly to hang on to a belief which is emotional and not

rational. It make a lot more sense to me that American Indians came here from

Asia, you can see it in the features. To deny it is an emotional response

brought on by intense and harmful adoration. Other Indians I know believe in the

Asian land bridge throry. Another thing- Ancient horses once roamed here

according to fossil evidence. But prior to European contact, there were no

modern horses, and Indians were amazed at the " magic dog " which turned all life

upside down from then on. Besides , we just saw on History channel last night

that at one time all the continents were joined.

And none of us here were alive at that time so we will never know for sure. All

we can do is guess.

Everyone needs to see " District 9 " . It is a really good movie. We bought it for

Christmas. Amazing.

Jan H

This ancestor history thread has been so interesting and enlighenting! You're

right,Bobby....no matter where we came from, it is so importamnt to teach our

children and grandchildren about our past...good or bad!  We've gone to Pow

Wows ...They are always interesting. Once they had Ed dance with them because it

was a dance honoring veterns and law enforcement( it was right after 9/11)

...and once I was given a gift of cloth at one. Even tho we're not Indian, they

were always very gracious to us and made us feel welcome.  For those who have

never been to a Pow Wow., you should! The outfits are amazingly beautiful, the

artwork is incredible, you will learn how to throw a spear, drum and other things.

.. Go visit one!

As a teenage, my son presenting his rebellion at even going to school! It's

awful when you know that you have a bright child but they would rather stand in

the smoke pit at school, than attend a class.

So finally I gave him an ultimatum. Either attend the little Baptist School in

the area or get a job and start paying to live here. Well, he choose the

Christian School and was there about 2-1/2 yrs.

There was a time, the the students were challenging the minister about the two

beliefs. I can only imagine that my son was heavy into that challenge and it

was absolutely awesome to see him coming in from school and directly to the

computer to research these theories. Now, this was a kid that had no Christian

training whatsoever prior to this and so was only taught the evolution. After a

few weeks, he was telling me that he thought he might have a theory of his own

and that was, when it says that God created the heavens and the earth in 6 days

and rested on the 7th. How could we little humans possibly know how long a day

is in God's terms???

Then the minister invited another minister up for a visit from the states.

Prior to going into his ministry, he had been a geologist. As he said - there

is absolutely no doubt about the fossils from ancient times etc., especially

proving the age of the dinosaurs. But, he says - whose to say how long a day

is in God's time???

There is no reason they couldn't have migrated into South America too. Jan

Well said, Bobby!!!

Like is say - peel back the skin and we all look the same underneath!! In the

end, isn't it really silly to hold on to any kind of prejudice to any other

peoples for deeds that none of us today, had anything to do with??

You think we Canadians would repeat the mistake of giving the French one whole

province of it's own today. Nope, instead we say, if they want to separate that

badly, just make sure you take the eastern provinces with you.

Hey, a fella in Las Vegas was telling us sometime ago. Both Canada and the US

divided their countries wrong!! It should have been north and south, not east

and west. Because in both cases, the west can't get along with the east and

it's like we are entirely different people.

Learn from history - lest history repeats itself over and over.

Love, Bobby

The Athapaskans of the Southwest can

actually understand some words used by Indians of British Columbia, the

you ever been to the basin?? That would be a different type of living wouldn't

it? A dear friend that just passed away this year worked for several years

between Inuvik and Tuktoyaktut. His wife would make the whole family's

parkas....

Gloria

It might suprise you to know that the Indians on both sides of my family tree

were from the Mackenzie river basin in Canada.

Well one thing we have to know for sure - you have to have the longest ancestry

line in North America, of us all here so far!!

My mom's dad was named , a long time alcoholic who was half apache and

half Spanish. Her mom was full blooded Spanish, and her Grandma's sisters were

blond hair blue eyes. The blond sisters were allowed to go in the theatre

through the front door, and the dark haired ones were not. This was in Denver in

Gloria - everybody will probably shake their heads at me, but I don't

believe in dinasaurs. I don't believe the world has been here as long as

the scientists say. The age of old things is determined by carbon dating.

Carbon dating depends on what is called 1/2 life. Figure out how long it

takes something to deteriorate and from there you can determine when it

started. But the whole theory is based on a falacy, so everything " learned "

from it is wrong. Now, I am sure most of you won't agree with me, but that

is okay. But if you study a lot of scientific findings in the last decades,

they are finding that what they built their science on in the first place is

not right, so they have to start over. As for evolution: My daughter went

to a Christian school, transferred to a public school near the end of 9th

grade. Evolution is defined as a theory, but it is taught as fact in the

public schools. She had studied creationism in the Christian school, and as

soon as she transferred she got in the middle of a study of evolution.

It really bothered her. So, I had her go through her text and find every

reference to theory and point it out in class. Since she was simply using

the text book, there was nothing they could do about it. Jan H

We, and definitely I am included in that we, seem to be spending a lot of

time and posts on off topic stuff. I am by no means saying we should stop

because the culture stuff is very interesting to me, and obviously to

others. But, if there is someone out there wondering why we are doing this

on a liver support group and not discussing liver related topics, it is

because questions haven't been asked which require us to dwell on that. So,

if you do have a question related to the purpose of this group, please ask

it. We are a family here, and we discuss a lot of things some related, and

some not. But, while we are a family, we are similar to a family which was

adopted into other families and we have become reunited, so we are trying to

get to know each other. We have quite a mix here and everybody has

something to offer to make us one. Jan H
