Rotten egg smell - Sulfite sensitivity would be my first suspicion. (Also

described as the smell of burnt matches.)

Has she recently increased her intake of dried fruit (sulfited), commercial

french fries, hamburger helper, rice a roni, wine, wine coolers, instant

mashed potatoes, etc???

Now, often this causes diarrhea as well, but " just gas " could be a symptom

as well. She doesn't have asthma as well, by any chance?? Sulfites can be a

trigger for asthma too.

I wrote an article for Sully's Living Without magazine a few years ago on

the subject. Since I can't send as an attachment, will post to " files. "

Also, what wasn't covered in the article was emerging research on B-12

deficiency and molybdenum's role in sulfite sensitivity. If you do a google

search, you'll find good info on these as well.

Easy enough to try a sulfite/sulfate free diet for 7 days, monitor response,

add back some sulfited dried fruit and see what happens.

By the way, the (Mediator Release Test (MRT) panel includes sulfites. But,

if this is the ONLY trigger, easily discovered via diet modification.

I will be seeing a 23 y.o. female who suddenly developed a problem with

intestinal gas - rotten egg smell. Has tried charcoal, Beano,

probiotics, yogurt, stress reduction, simethicone and eliminating gassy

foods without relief. Also constipation - although I don't know if this

occurred before or after her food restrictions.

Has mild anemia, no history of eating disorders but weighs 88#, tissue

transglutaminase negative. Currently on Zelnorm and metronidazole.

Any ideas? I was going to explore possible fructose intolerance.
