I'm perfectly willing to keep tweaking the NPH for a while longer. But I'll

ask himabout the L anyway...just for general information. By the time I see

him I may have my AM BG down (see earlier post). Vicki

L or UL works much longer, this may be easier in some ways, but bring

drawbacks in others, if you are so anxious about hypos. Its the more

complicated to treat a hypo the longer-acting insulin you use! >>

I'll keep on taking it. >>

Vicki, you sound like such a good candidate for low-carbing! I apologize for

not recalling ... how many grams of carbs a day are you averaging?

Susie, before I started on insulin (lispro at meals and 2 NPH at bedtime) I

really was STRICTLY low carbing -- definitely under 100 carbs per day -- and

a pretty limited diet, but I was losing so much weight (down to 117 and I'm

5'8 " ) that that's when my doctor put me on insulin. Now my diet is much less

restricted -- I'm allowing myself more carbs and gauging my insulin to that.

Unfortunately, I'm not real good at estimating carbs especially when eating

out and sometimes I guess wrong. And sometimes labeled foods that look

innocuous really aren't.

For instance, the other day I had two (packaged) chicken tacos. The package

said this amount had 33 carbs. Using my usual ratio -- about one unit per 15

carbs -- I gave myself 2 units. But when I checked two hours later it was

obvious that I should've taken twice as much insulin! These kinds of

unpleasant suprises seem to happen all the time.

Incidentally, when I started insulin I was taking 2500 mg. glucophage too,and

my ratio of insulin to carbs worked out pretty accurately to one unit per 30

grams but when I cut out just one 500-mg pill the ratio of carbs to insulin

halved. * That's why I'm staying on 2000 glucophage!

* Doc suggested as long as I was taking insulin I might as well gradually

taper off all pills.

Vicki, checking my food counter, takeout tacos = 41.1 g. carbs per taco.

Baked taco shells = 13.1 g. carbs per taco. Empty tortilla shells = 25.5 g.

carbs per shell.

My guess is you ate 66 grams of carbs there. Were those tacos actually 33

grams carbs taco?

The shame is that all our government requires of food manufacturers is that

they post their " estimate " of what the nutritional components are. All we

can do is hope they are being accurate and honest - and keep testing. If we

continue posting brand names of foods whose labels seem to be inaccurate,

maybe we can see if there is a pattern. These large companies are very

responsive to customer complaints!
