I feel so bad for youi right now about the perseverating on things, gets like this sometimes and its enough to drive one totally batty. And when gets in a mmod like this, it will go on and on asking for one thing after another, and yes, I have had days where it would go for 4-6 hours and to the point where you just cant take it anymore. As far as meds go, gets risperdal, clonidine, buspar, ritalin, and Luvox. I really dont like using so many different meds, but for now its a necessary evil. Have you had any experience with Luvox? We switched to it from Prozac a while back b/c it it suposed to deal a little more with the OCD type behaviors a bit more than some of the other SSRI's. I have tried to eliminate some of the meds in the past, and it always turns into nightmareish bevavior. Have you ever tried with maybe giving a half dose of the clonidine to calm things a bit when they start to get really out of hand? How much does he take of it at night if you dont mind me asking. takes .1 mg. at bed. We have tried alot of different meds to finally get to the point where we are at now, where things are pretty managable for the most part. This is getting a bit long, but if you want to ask me anything about any of the meds feel free to write me back on or off the list. Again I can pretty much understand exactly what your going throgh right now, I've been there, honestly and I know how bad it can be. You are in my thoughts and prayers and I hope you can figure something out to make things a bit easier for all of you.
Guest guest
Terry, It is ok not to give ritalin one day but not ok to skip zoloft. I know this from personal expereience. When I would accidently miss a pill, my ears would ring and I would go manic. Guest guest
Woops, forgot to mention to never skip clonidine either. That is actually a high blood pressure medication and should never be skipped. If you do not want him on it any longer, you slowly take him off the drug but never stop abruptly. As for the Zoloft, I am confused...I know that taking it can cause mania in folks that are predisposed to such (bi-polar), you're saying that not taking it can also cause mania?? How on earth do you know which it is? Could Sam be manic because he missed a dose yesterday even only being on it 2 weeks? Or could Sam be manic because after being on it 2 weeks it has caused mania? I've described it to people before and even had it described to me about other autistic kids before Sam was talking and I couldn't understand how it could be that bad. Sam also does this thing where he takes me by the chin and pulls my face over when he says things over and over to make sure I am understanding him, I guess. > As far as meds go, gets risperdal, clonidine, buspar, ritalin, and > Luvox. We did try Luvox a while back and I thought it worked better for the OCD stuff, too, but unfortunately it made Sam more agitated and irritable. I had thought about asking the doc about using 1/2 the dose of Zoloft and 1/2 the Luvox to see if we could get the good results of both without the bad results of both. But then he started having the increase in rage attacks and we were trying different meds to help with that. > I have tried to eliminate some of the meds in the past, and it always turns > into nightmareish bevavior. Yes, we've used Clonidine in the past both in tablet form (he had horrible rebounds when it was time for the next dose, he was worse than before he got the 1st one) and in patch (the only place we could put it where he wouldn't reach it was between his should blades and then he would rub his back against a table to get the patch off). The nighttime dose he got was usually 1/2 of a .1 mg at bedtime. He didn't get it all the time, tho. > We have tried alot of different meds to finally get to the point where we > are > at now, where things are pretty managable for the most part. > > This is getting a bit long, but if you want to ask me anything about any of > the meds feel free to write me back on or off the list. > > Again I can pretty much understand exactly what your going throgh right > now, > I've been there, honestly and I know how bad it can be. Absolutely. > Or could Sam be manic because after being on it 2 weeks it has > caused mania? Regardless, you still need to wean off it. You could give half a dose & see if he gets better or worse. Matt has been taking it for 3 years. I am very familiar with what happens when you miss a dose. It's a very bad thing. It messes up the level of seratonin in your brain. In Sam's case his body may have gone into hyper-production to make up for not getting it. Or he may be responding " backwards " as with ADD & caffeine. I would not change more than one med at a time, so you can see what the effects are clearly & know which med is doing what. -Sara.
Guest guest
I'm sorry to hear that Sam is having such a hard time. I am not familiar with risperadol so I can't offer advice on that one. I do know that the clonidine should slow him down some so you could dose him with that. I would NOT give him any more zoloft. was taking Paxil, which is the same type of med as zoloft and he was HORRID. He had the most awful time and we are positive it made his behavior much worse. He was quite manic like in his behaviors. Even before starting the new meds, just stopping the paxil was an improvement. GOOD LUCK. Guest guest
Terry, I haven't time to read all the responses, but don't just pull the Zoloft. He needs to wean off it, or switch directly to something similar or he could experience withdrawal. It's also possible that the Zoloft doesnt' have the same effect on him if he's been stopped and restarted. This happens with some meds with autism. I would ask the Dr. to try another SSRI and see if it will help. In the meantime, I'll pray for strength for you and Ron (and the other kids!) I hope I'm doing the right thing...it's so hard to know. I try to just rely on my gut on these things but I tend to doubt myself so easily sometimes. My thinking at this point is that the Ritalin was making the obsessions worse - 3 days without it and they are better. He is still saying the usual " Sam goes to KMart " kind of thing but is satisfied quicker with an " OK " . The doc had added the Ritalin at the same time he stopped the Zoloft and though Sam's counselor thinks the obsession got worse because the Zoloft was stopped, I don't. The Zoloft never seemed to work that well with the obsessions anyway. Plus, I think it's what made him manic yesterday....he has been much better today, the teacher reported a " great day " something she doesn't say lightly about Sam, LOL! Just hoping I'm on the right track...can't talk to the doc til tomorrow as today is a holiday...thanks for your response! ******Terry****** Wife to: Ron Mom to: Alec 10, NVLD - Sam 4, Autism - Abbie 3, PDD-NOS

Guest guest
I don't know if this will help at all but I always have my boys medications made into liquids. Complex compounds actually. That way it is easy for me to give in some drink and easy to give very small amounts. I just wondered how you were giving Sam a medication in pill form.
