Guest guest
Hey, The following is from a lady who has a list for psychic children. She's tried to give me some suggestions about helping Boone. Very helpful for calming an NT kid, but I've sort of had to explain autism to her. She's pretty quick. She figured out a lot of things really fast. But the suggestion at the bottom of the page was rather ingenius I thought. Check it out. I bet Enrique could get into this -- if he isn't already. Sissi > 1. have you considered getting Boone a skin diving suit to wear for part of each day as his regular clothes? There is a weighted vest that is used for autistic children. Boone likes to dress in tight clothes and I want to get a vest too. I think it's a much better solution than Ritalin. > 2. what you are implying is that Boone is highly visual - that he is able to focus more at something visual than in an auditory mode... whether is it in pictatorial symbolic language or even in written words...right? so have you or his doctors researched how to help that oversensitivity to auditory stuff? I seem to remember that there are nutitional aids for some of that.... We're doing the gluten-free casein-free diet. I'm sure that's the one you've heard of. It's not that hard with Boone. He's a meat and potatoes kid anyway. He never cared for cheese and breads, so he doesn't miss them. If you stay away from processed and packaged foods, the rest is easy. > I used to get over stimulated/frustrated in grad school from sounds of any kind, and I remember reading in the health journals about this being a B-complex deficiency.... I do remember that for most of grad school I did very well on 200 mg b-complex a day... (since it is a water soluable vitamin I would imagine it would be safe for boone). also, isn't there a field of work called auditory integration or some such thing?.... just a thought... AIT we haven't done. He does attend sensory integration therapy twice a week. And we're getting ready to start therapuetic riding again -- now that it's not so hot outside. He called me mommy for the first time during riding camp. He also has a trampoline, which helps alot. (Hey! You're pretty good at this stuff.) > 3. I don't know if this is my own predilection coming through, but I also feel from what you say - that boone might really enjoy seeing images of things from sacred geometry and from epyptian hierogpyphics or native american petroglyphs or whatever... that pictorial languages might really resonate with him... you might even find you have to get him a teacher in any of these if he shows extreme enjoyment! grin. for instance here is one crop circle site on the 'net for starters... > http://www.cropcircleconnector.com/temporarytemples/library/ccav98.html Now this is ingenius! I bet some moms on the parenting autism list would love this. Ummm ... it may be the start of a new obsession, but it beats the heck out of ceiling fans. Thanks! Guest guest
Very interesting Sissi. I bet Boone and many of our other kids would love the pictorial languages. I'm going to check that out myself. It sounds like she was right on top of things, eh? Guest guest
-- Amy, I think youre right. That site was very interesting. likes circular objects a lot, like curlicues, logos from the trains. He really likes suns and moons, a lot of celestial stuff. He drew a nice picture of two suns and two half moons. He seems fascinated with how it changes from day to night. If you think about it is a circular concept. This lady sounds very intuitive, she caught unto the autism thing right away. Thea - In parenting_autism@y..., " Amy Helmuth " <ajhelmuth@h...> wrote: > Very interesting Sissi.
