I just participated in a Salary Tele-coaching seminar. One of the primary

things I took away from that seminar to know your market value. Who would

pay the difference between what the students pay and what you charge? I

would definitely find out what the market value of nutrition counseling is

in your geographic area.

Subject: Consulting

Hi Everyone,

I've been asked to do consulting work for a local college. It's for

students who want to talk with someone about anything in the world of

eating.

What do you think is a good hourly rate to charge the college? All the

kids have to pay is the minimal $5 fee. This would strictly be based on

appointments only which could vary from week to week.

Any other advice is also appreciated!

Thanks,

Sherri

Terrific advice, Carol! Now I know how you most valued from my teleseminar

today ; )

Yes, Sherri: know what your service worth--to you (time, effort) and in the

market place.

Does the college have a budget for the service they're requesting?

Can you get them to name a figure first?

Does it take into consideration your travel time?

If appointments vary from week to week, it's likely they will not be

efficiently scheduled. (E.g, One at 9 AM, one at 1 PM; one on Tuesday, one

of Friday, etc.)

Will they pay for no-show appointments (guaranteed to be high among students)?

The $5 is a token and should have no bearing on determining *your* fee.

I've posed several issues, not to discourage you, but to help you examine

all the factors involved so you don't undersell your value.

All the best,

Those were terrific issues to think about and I have posed those

questions to the Director of Student Health Services. I'm wondering

about malpractice insurance. Would you recommend it? I've also asked

the Director what the past RD's hourly rate was to perhaps start a

dollar figure somewhere.

Thank you,

Sherri

Absolutely, without a doubt YES! As Dr. Hung had mentioned in the past, our

malpractice insurance sure does gives lots of bang for the buck! You need

to protect yourself and your assets!

I'd advise MUCH caution with this approach! Years ago (20), the local RD

was charging $12/hour for " consulting positions. " I went out to get the same

contracts when she moved - charged 30/hour. Got the contracts.

IF I'd have positioned myself even remotely to what the old RD was making,

I'd have made 1/2 of what I was worth!

Yes, I know what you mean. Well as it turned out the past RD charged

$55/hr and that included travel time and even if the student was a no

show.

The director did agree that I should get malpractice insurance. Does

anybody have an idea how much that costs? I live in Northern Indiana.

Is it a big ordeal to get?

Thanks,

Sherri

DEFINITELY get insurance! You can get it through Marsh (ADA members get a

discount I think) and it's like $80/year. I charge $50/hour. I don't get

mileage, but do keep track of it as a business expense for taxes.

So they were willing to pay a diet tech $30/hr?! And how much education do you

have over a diet tech?

I think this is the biggest flaw of our profession accept what is offered.

After we're in a job we find out what they paid our predecessor.

Sharon Staier wrote:

This is all very valuable and timely information.

I've been consulting part-time at a college and was told the RD prior to me was

paid 25/hr. The most they could pay me was 30/hour and so that is what I

accepted. This felt low, but I felt like I was being hired as more of a

nutrition educator, out of dining services; in fact on my hiring form I found

out it says :Diet tech, not RD. This I need to have changed. The main benefit is

schedule flexibility. I do work part-time from home, bill for any computer/email

time I have with students or the university. Now I am working out of health

services and am clearly doing clinical dietitian work with complicated cases.

The company does reimburse my fees for malpractice, ADA/CDR fees and up to 150

for CEU's.

I have my one year review next week and am considering bringing up the following

points:

1. The work out of Health Services is clearly more clinical, clearly RD work.

2. Health Services is planning on billing to insurance in the next year.

3. 30 is well below the average current consultant pay

4. I have done workshops for Athletic Services and Health Education, teaching

students.

5. I have letters of appreciation from each department I have worked with.

Any other points to make? Unfortunately, with the flexiblity I am afforded, I

don't really want to walk away from this so I don't have a take it or leave it

mentality. I just think I need to ask for more based on what I see you all

getting paid.

Thanks. I appreciate your expert guideance.

Just to share:

I am doing a corporate wellness program. I requested a diet tech or a

student (either tech student or 4 year student) to assist with checking

in people for class and taking weights- 20 people to a class. I would

also need assistance setting up papers (I would clean up myself!)- more

clerical than nutrition but I thought good experience. In addition, I

will be hiring in the next year another person and am unsure if I will

need a tech or RD, so good experience with likely P/T job. Total time

expected was 60 minutes 1-2 times a week, and I give a schedule for 3

months. It paid $30 a hour. I had 2 people apply, one (BS student)did

not want to be obligated to 2 nights a week nad the other accepted. She

cancelled (an diet tech student) because she felt it paid too little!

I refused to budge as I thought the pay was very good for the time nad

job.

I plan on hiring a high school student!
