Guest guest
Hi all, I went to see the doctor about my thyroid yesterday. He said everything was fine and he didn't need to change my doasage amount. I have to see him again in three mths. But I have to say he doesn't have much of a bedside manner.. He weighed me and said there was hardly any change. He was in such a hurry to get out of there that he hardly looked at the scales. I stopped him before he left the room and said I couldn't understand why I didn't lose any weight. I told him I walk for 1 hour everyday at a fast pace and go to aerobics 3 nights a week. He said " well there is nothing I can do for you, I can't give you pills or anything, maybe your still eating too much. " I said that I have been watching my carb intake and what I eat. He said " oh well " anyway I will see you again in 3 mths. I was disgusted with that visit. I could have punched him right there and then. When I left his office I could have cried because I know I have been trying so hard to get my weight off. That visit was a big disappointment I hate when a doctor rushes you in and out pf his and doesn't have time to listen to you. When I got home I told my husband what happened, he will be coming with me next time. He was very supportive yesterday and made me feel a lot better. Jim (my husband) told me he could see I was losing weight and I know I am because I can fit quite comfortably in some of my jeans now that I haven't worn for a while. On May 7th, I have an appointment with the my own doctor about my diabetes. I will see what he has to say. Hopefully something good. Just had to get this of my chest. Guest guest
Dear Gail---So glad you " just shared " !! That is what this is for!! Doctors can be so frustrating. Some visits are so poor that it is like throwing money away!! They really ought to be ashamed. This is a very sore point with me. Most of them are so rich and then you get nothing for your money!!! And time--they don't care how long you have to wait for no info!! Disgusting!! Kathie Re: Just Sharing > > > Hi all, > > I went to see the doctor about my thyroid yesterday. Guest guest
Hi Gail, I have experienced the same at hospital. It's not funny to be treated in that way. Do you pay for visiting doctors in the US? - Here in Denmark all visits to the doctors and all treatment at hospital are free of any charge for all, independent of income level etc. As for that we have an excellent system in Denmark. Keep up the good mood! Most of us have tried to be treated that way - just forget it :-). - I know it's not so easy, but to look forward, (and forget what's history) can release some positive energy. Kind regards Re: Just Sharing > > > > > > > > Hi all, > > > > I went to see the doctor about my thyroid yesterday. He said everything > > was fine and he didn't need to change my doasage amount. The bottom line here is that we have choices. No one has to put up with a doctor they aren't comfortable with, or feels that they are not paying attention to their needs, imagined or otherwise. I would promptly discharge that doctor and get another one. -- Dave -- April 30, 1999 t2 08/98 Glucophage & Aspartame Davor's daily aphorism: I'm the person your mother warned you about. ----------------------------------------------------------------
Guest guest
Dear Gail, I was a respirtory therapist for 10 years. There are many doctors that don't have a good bedside many. During my hospital days I learned one very important thing. Just because he/she is a doctor doesn't mean they are related to God. They had to school to obtain the position they have. Which means they are just human. Having faith and trust in your doctor is an important part of your ability to take good care of yourself. If you don't feel that you are getting the serviced that you are paying for. You have the right to change doctors. Your health is so important and if he doesn't have tiime to be (part of your health care team) do U have time for him? I think it is great that your husband is so supportive. I also think he shouldn't have to go with you to make sure that you get the services that you are paying for. When we moved and needed a new doctor, this is what I did. I called several doctors and made 15min appointments with each. Yes it cost us some money to do this. I went with a list of questions and let them know that I was interviewing doctors to decide which one we would be hiring as part of our health team. Out 7 doctors only one thought I was nuts. In fact the other 6 doctors felt what I was doing was important and said they wished more people would do the same. As for the money it cost us, only the one doctor charged me for his 15 min. I am sorry for your bad mannered doctor. There is no excuse for how he treated you. Remember you are paying him/her for a service. If you feel that service is not being rendered change doctors....... Good Luck and remember the list is here for you. Merry
Guest guest
Hi everyone; Thank you all for your response. I get more support from this group than my doctor. When I see my diabetes doctor next week I will ask him to recommend someone else. I know doctors have a busy schedule but they can take a minute of their time to show a patient some concern especially if that person is feeling frustrated or upset. I think the more people they can see in a day the more money goes into their pockets. to answer your question, I live in Canada. Our visits to the doctor are covered by MCP. I think I will take your advice. I will throw away the scales. I go to tae-bo classes 3 nights a week and from now on I will take measurements of my body and keep track to see if I lose those inches. I do know that I have more energy than I used to. So to hell with that dr. and his attitude I know the weight is coming of and I am not going to give up. Thank you all again. God Bless Gail

They control the number of medical school grads so they can keep the money all to themselves. Then they have this great excuse that they are too busy to be take time with us. Then they import doctors from Third World countries to do the " dirty work " like working in the inner-city hospitals, doing the autopsies, etc. Your frustration is understandable. When we shift from higher to lower carb intake, we firm up. That is why we not only weigh ourselves but take our measurements regularly. There is this myth that Americans are eating far too much protein. But for us type 2's, who have trouble processing our food anyway, we often feel weak and deprived on a low-protein diet. Although I take pains to minimize the fat, I eat high-protein, and it really agrees with me. As you can tell by the fit of your clothes, you are apparently losing inches. Do you take a fluid pill? I take one daily. What I notice is that, when I exercise more and cut my food intake, as the fat migrates out of the cells, water takes its place. I will get frustrated because I know I should be losing weight, and yet the weight is stuck. Then suddenly, after many days, there will be this big " whoosh " and I will drop at lest 2 pounds in one day. Have you figured out how many grams of carbohydrates you are eating daily? If you are not eating in the ketogenic range, you need to watch the fat intake, because it is more calorically dense than carbohydrates or protein (approx. 7 calories/gm. vs. 4 calories/gram). Maybe we can all put our heads together and share what works for us with each other? Susie

Guest guest
I am a type II diabetic and found out about this a month or so ago. I was very confused at first and then through the help of a diabetic list decided to go on a low carb/no sugar eating program. Of course, it is very much like atkins. I keep my carbs below 20 per day (not by choice but because I must) and eat no sugar at all. I check the labels on everything and use my trusty carb counter for the rest. I also walk every evening and that keeps my BG count lower. Any carbs that I eat (even cottage cheese) makes me skyrocket. I do not see this as a diet anymore but a way of life. I have lost about 10-15 pounds but do not weigh myself except when I go to the doctor. My blood glucose stays about average. One day I made a mistake and ate something cooked with carbs and the next morning my readings skyrocketed. Won't do that again. I actually do not feel deprived at all and do not have sugar cravings. Most of the diabetic symptoms have gone away. Tomorrow I have an appointment with the dietician because according to my insurance I have to go through diabetic education. I am a little nervous that she is going to fight me on this way of eating. I know this is working for me! Good thing she is pregnant and I will not see her again for several months. I can't decide whether to do battle or just let her talk and shake my head. I hope she does not want me to do a menu. I also have an appointment with a diabetic nurse on Thursday. I have no idea what she is going to do. Anyone out there have any advise for me with my appointment tomorrow? I am already worried about it. I am also interested in any tasty recipes with low carbs. I have bookmarked quite a few web sites and plan to look through them today. Any suggestions would be appreciated. I have no idea what she is going to do ... >> , you are doing a great job of holding your numbers in check! I had to switch doctors and was really nervous about it too. But she saw my weight chart, my bg results, and she tested my HbA1c and became a believer. Just to reassure herself, she did some bloodwork, which also satisfied her, and did a followup HbA1c six months later. Now, the dietitians were another matter. The two of them have a death grip on the dang Food Pyramid. So I argued with them. The doctor is the Real Deal anyway, as far as authorizing tests, changing prescriptions, etc. Best of success in the future, ! Susie
Guest guest
Merry, It is great to hear from you. Glad that you are doing so well. I also find that I have higher readings when I eat too much in the evening or if I eat late. I know that it is important for a diabetic to eat at the same time every day but sometimes it is almost impossible. I also find that my readings are a little higher when I eat out. I guess it is best to really know what is in the food. Anyway, I am glad that you are doing so good and glad to hear from you again. Guest guest
Hi Gail, list... After a very busy week and then a big Kentucky Derby weekend here in Louisville, I finally have had time to read all my messages. WOW! Gail, you hit the very spot I was in until just last week. I was very dissatisfied with my physician. He only seemed to care about the A1C and my blood sugars. If there was anything else wrong with my body he paid no attention to it! Well, needless to say, I didn't go in as much as I needed to. (What made it even worse is he is on several boards with my husband and my son's soccer coach!) That's when I joined this list. I wanted to learn what I needed to before changing doctors. I read Bernstein, Protein Power, and Atkins. I finally called his office and asked to switch to the woman doctor there. They let me switch. I went on Tuesday and was I ever impressed with her and her knowledge of diabetes! She has not read Bernstein, yet she advocates low-carbing and many of his ways. She spent 50 (!) minutes with me talking first and then she examined me. We did a whole spectrum of testing, including thyroid, C-Peptide and all the functions and she gave (yes, gave) me a new Dex meter to use. I am waiting for the tests to come back and will be faxing her blood sugars weekly along with a complete food diary and activity level. She changed my insulin just slightly until she can see where I am at but already I have stopped having the highs and only one hypo incident last night! I am so impressed with her and feel fortunate that it was so easy to find someone so knowledgeable. I hope Gail, that you will find the courage to change doctors and keep changing if need be, until you find someone who cares about your health! Good luck! You CAN do it, I did! Thanks also to Susie who constantly reminds us all that we need to keep fighting this disease and questioning everything! We cannot be complacent or we lose the ability to control our disease! I am so glad you are here Susie and everyone else who shares their path! Sorry this was so long winded...Have a great day everyone.... Guest guest
Gail, Another thing - the weight. I was so excited to get on the scale. After low-carbing for a month and buying TWO new dresses a size smaller, I just knew that I must have lost 20 pounds! Well, NO way ! I was so digusted until I remembered that I don't keep a scale at home for that very reason. I would obsess daily if I weighed myself! I look better, I feel better and my clothes are loose - yet the scale did not reflect that. Oh well....just like my Derby picks this weekend - you can't win 'em all!!! <BG> Cyndi
Guest guest
Go girl, that's a really good thing you are doing. How far is the walk? Do people contribute based on how many blocks, miles, etc or do they just give you a donation because you are walking?
Guest guest
Hi Everyone; I am doing a walk for the Canadian Diabetes Assoc. on Sunday. I raised $125 so far, hope to get a little more before then. After all it certainly is a good cause. Just thought I share with the group. Guest guest
Speaking of diabetes walk...I just got notification from the ADA about the " America's Walk for Diabetes " to take place nationwide on September 25th. This is a six mile walk, fundraiser for diabetes of course. Last year was my first time... it being Portland (Oregon), it rained, of course, the entire time. I was surprised to find no team from my place of employment (a large metropolitan hospital), especially since they have an excellent diabetic education center. Anyway, I took it upon myself to put a notice in the hospital newsletter this year and I'm trying to raise a team myself. Last year I just made the walk and made my own donation; this year, since I have advance notice, I'm going to try to raise donations. If anyone out there is interested in donating, whatever amount, let me know. Vicki
Guest guest
Gail Duffett writes: << I experienced low bg's this morning, the worst time yet. I broke out in a sweat and got very shakey, I could hardly hold my meter to check my bg. My legs were weak and like rubber. My bg was 2.7, lowest for me since diagnosed. I have to say it really frightened me because I was home alone. I don't like that feeling that's for sure. My bg levels have been low the past few days in the mornings. Dropping in the low 3's. Is it because I might need to reduce my morning shot? I take 18units at am. >> Gail, I'm sorry to hear you're suddenly having a problem with readings. I am assuming that you are getting the lows *before* you take your morning shots? In that case, we need to look at what happened the previous night. Too much insulin ... or too many units of an insulin type that lasts too long? Have you changed your diet or exercise level at all?
