Hello

I am looking for information about the following:

A co-worker would like me to help them plan a menu for weight loss. I had them

keep a food diary for 3 days listing what they ate with amounts for meals and

snacks. They also listed the feelings they had when they ate (depressed, sad,

etc.), and how they felt afterward (stuffed, full, etc.).

I am at a loss. This person is obese, but the meals that were written down are

perfect! They included proper portion sizes and many " free foods " (diet jello,

lettuce, etc.). There were also many fruits and vegetables, and lean meats

included. This person claims to try to exercise each day as well.

I am not sure what to suggest them change? I do not work with weight loss very

much, and most of the ideas I had for the person, appear to be already followed.

Anyone have any ideas/suggestions? I know this was discussed recently, but I

did not save the posts as I do not normally work with weight-loss clients. Any

information would be appreciated.

Thanks for your help,

There could be many reasons why your friend gave you a perfect food diary. The

most likely reason is that she is embarrassed to tell you what she eats. If she

is obese, she probably needs more than just a meal plan--she needs a

comprehensive program that also includes behavior modification, counseling,

ongoing support, etc. (I assume she is not paying you for your services). I

suggest that you tell your friend that you would like to help, but this really

isn't your area of expertise. I would find the name of a dietitian in your area

who specializes in weight management and give your friend her name and number.

Successful weight loss requires a long term commitment for lifestyle change, not

just a diet.

Good luck!

Your co-worker is not being truthful in the diary. I foresee nothing but

trouble for you if you continue to try and help, so quit while you're ahead. If

you don't work too much with obese people that's an excellent excuse to opt out.

Refer her to a support group or a dietitian that does.

I would give benefit of doubt and say, " I see writing it down has helped you

gain awareness of your habits and Congratulations on the changes you have

made! This meal plan should work well and should show some positive weight

loss in the next few weeks. "
