Guest guest
, The Medical Nutrition Therapy should be the same as it is for a gasrectomey. Liquids for 2 weeks, with a liquid MVI, and a protein drink or a pre and post surgery oral supplement like Imapct from Novartis. Pureed foods for the next 2 weeks continue protein drink and vitamin. Soft foods as tolerated 3-6 months post surgery. Labs should be similar to bariatric surgery protocols for the Roux-en-Y: B-12, pre-albumin, Iron panel, Magnesium, Calcium, Thiamin, Zinc. After 6 months he should be able to eat small amounts--4 ounces--if he chews well--about x6 a day. Continue vitamins. Others may have a slightly different approach, but overall it is a slow progession from liquid to solid, small amounts, chew well, with a protein or recovery drink, and vitamins. Changing topics to the spleen... My understanding is a spleen breaks down red blood cells, aides in immunity, and when absent one is at higher risk for infections. However, if one keeps themselves in good health their prognosis should be excellent even without a spleen. Hope some of that helps Stocks University of Michigan -- In rd-usa , " Collier " wrote: > > Hi all...my sister asked me to pass this on for some ideas... > > She knows a guy who had some accident or something and is apparently having his stomach and spleen removed. Anyone ever hear of that? Know what to do, nutritionally? I think this is odd (keep in mind, I am getting the info from my sister and not the guy) especially since no one has apparently discussed nutrition with him. I would think that would be one of the MAIN concerns! Any help would be appreciated. > > I just re-read my note from her...this is the result of a " botched surgery " . > > Collier, RD > Shore Memorial Hospital > 9507 Hospital Avenue > PO Box 17 > Nassawadox, VA 23413 > > fax > > To eat is a necessity, but to eat intelligently is an art. -LaRoche foucauld > > > >
