Turmeric Supplementation Holds Potential for the Treatment of

Rheumatoid Arthritis

Reference: " Efficacy and mechanism of action of turmeric supplements in

the treatment of experimental arthritis, " Funk JL, Frye JB, et al,

Arthritis Rheum, 2006; 54(11): 3452-64. (Address: University of Arizona,

Tucson, USA. E-mail: jfunk@... ).

Summary: In a study involving rats induced with rheumatoid arthritis,

supplementation with a curcuminoid-containing turmeric extract, similar

in composition to commercially available turmeric dietary supplements,

was found to profoundly inhibit joint inflammation and periarticular

joint destruction in a dose-dependent manner. When rats were treated

with turmeric extract, local activation of NF-kappaB and the expression

of NF-kappaB-regulated genes mediating joint inflammation and

destruction (chemokines, cyclooxygenase 2, RANKL) were prevented.

Furthermore, inflammatory cell influx, joint levels of prostaglandin

E(2), and periarticular osteoclast formation were inhibited. These

results suggest that turmeric extract may be effective at reducing

symptoms of rheumatoid arthritis. Clinical trials evaluating the

effectiveness of supplementation with turmeric in humans with rheumatoid

arthritis are needed.
