Guest guest
Kathy, it might do you good to get out, although I understand long hours in a car are not very comfortable for those of us with RA. Recently I traveled from North Carolina to Savannah, stayed the next day, and then came back home the next. I got up the next day and traveled to Bristol, Tennessee, stayed the next day, and came home the next. I managed to survive without any harm done, and I had lots of fun. Maybe you could do some of the exercises that are recommended for plane travel. I'm not sure what they are, but I imagine you would just move your feet in various ways. Maybe this would keep you from getting so stiff. Just an idea. Maybe a trip would cheer you up. Guest guest
Hi Kathy, Its hard to think about having fun, when your not feeling well, and stressed out. I can see why your stressed out, when you have to worry about bills. Maybe, the trip will take your mind off the bills for awhile. You take a nice nap when you get there, and it might be a nice get away. I am so sorry your feeling so down, you always help us all out so much, wish I could do something. Take care, Tawny > hey, i was wondering what you guys think or give me your experiences on > traveling. i was planning on going with my family to the tn/ky border. probably a > 10-12 hr ride. my dr says i must stop every hour, get out and walk 10-15 > minutes, and do some stretches. i am riding with my sister and her hubby. we > can't stop that often. we will never get there!!! i am afraid by the time i > get there i will be so sore, do my shot, feel out of it and lay in the motel > room, i don't even have any $ to buy food, i was sharing the room with my > parents. so why bother. my hips and back are so sore right now i can't even > imagine it. i've cried about it all afternoon. but it is a family party with > people i don't even know. i think i am flaring. i have been in a nasty mood all > week. lots of stress too. $400 to fix my car and now how to pay rent? > > kathy in il > > > >

Guest guest
thanks tawny, i still have time to change my mind. i don't know why i get so afraid to try to live my life again. i thought i had it beat with all the concerts i have seen in the past 2 years. i just think about my trip to green bay and how sore and beat i was when i got home. this trip is at least twice as long if not more. plus i feel once i get there and start feeling better it'll be time to fold me back into the car for another 10-12 hour trip home. i do have the rest of the week off, so i would have the time to rest. i am having a rough time today just trying to wake up and get a load of laundry done, get my dog to the groomer and buy something to bring to my company picnic lat er today. kathy in il

Guest guest
Yes, we have done trips - the 14 hour kind in the car. I find that my son with autism needs to do more gaming (gameboy, leapster, etc) in order to help him. Is that possible for you? > > I am thinking about taking my children to see our very large family on > the East Coast. Guest guest
I'd second the idea of electronic games -- you can even utilize headphones if their game is loud and could annoy others, and the headphones could do double-duty if your child is sound-sensitive. (Mine is both sound sensitive and obsessed with Gameboy, Gamecube and Pokemon, so you can picture what our carry-on bags look like.) The Leapster has been a big help, too. We have a special backpack with a lot of pockets for all the necessary gadgets, like extra batteries, a car charger, a wall charger, extra games, even some books about the games. (My little guy can't yet read but he knows every Pokemon name and their stats, and he loves to flip through the huge magazines and catalogs of Pokemon.) We try to stick in a few different kinds of things that he doesn't normally have, too, like Color Wonder markers and books, foam stickers (big buckets of them at 's for around $5, sometimes much less on sale...put them in baggies in the backpack) and while our car has a movie system already in it, we also purchased an additional personal DVD player with dual-screens. (I have four kids, so that's not only for my little one.) We can listen to music with headphones or watch movies on it. Unfortunately, all this stuff costs but once you've got it, it's an investment that we've used over and over and over again. The first time I came home from our neuro, when I got the official dx, the drive was around 35-40 minutes or so..not horrible, but when you're alone and your child is freaking out because it's dark now but wasn't when you went into the office, and you're on the freeway and he hates the freeway, it was a LONG 35-40 minutes, being able to pop in a movie for him made all the difference in the world. Guest guest
I couldn't agree more that video-games are fantastic for avoiding car-trip melt-downs, but I suggest restricting video-games to " visited " environments, like the car. They're just too addictive for aspies, who really don't need encouragement to tune in to an alternate world. Also, this makes video-games a special reward for dealing with new places. I know many young aspies who have nearly unlimited time for these games in their homes. My heart goes out to the parents who don't want to give up the most effective drug they have found, but I have even more sympathy for the developmentally disabled kids who for Christmas get a second developmental disability called an X-box. Guest guest
Hi, Donna On our last trip in December that was 14 hours long I hooked up the gamecube. We have an audiovox VCD/DVD with two screens. The boys could play gamecube in the back while my daughter either watched TV or played a plug n play game (hooks directly into the screen). We just find that all the kids are happier in the car with audiovisual, but having the games with us helped a great deal at the house we visited. We could give our autistc son a couple of hours break from a reality that was harder for him to deal with because of its unpredictablility. > > I'd second the idea of electronic games -- you can even utilize > headphones if their game is loud and could annoy others, and the > headphones could do double-duty if your child is sound-sensitive. Guest guest
Good Moring Ladies! We are leaving tomorrow to drive down to San , TX to see our oldest graduate from basic training in the Air Force. We are planning on packing a cooler to save money on food costs. Does anyone have any suggestions for me to keep eating right. I was wondering if sandwich meats are ok in moderation? I usually don't eat them because I have heard that they are not very healthy. Guest guest
Hi , I'm a military mom too....my oldest sons are in the Army National Guard (he was in the Army for 4 years before that), and the Navy. I missed my oldest son's graduation from boot camp in Georgia and I really regret that we didn't make the effort to get there. I did get to go to Chicago to see my son's graduation from Navy basic training, and I am so happy I did. You will be too. It is always so hard to pick foods for traveling, and sandwich meats may be okay for a few days, but if you can find turkey or chicken that is natural with no preservatives, (at least none of the nitrites) that would be the way to go. I find them at Wild Oats in the deli section for when my husband goes hunting. You could also make up some salmon salad or chicken salad for sandwiches. Huumus spread makes a great sandwich too. The other things that would be good for packing when traveling would be peanut or almond butter sandwiches, cheese sandwiches (if you can get some good raw milk cheese and if you can handle dairy well), and of course, fresh fruits and veggie sticks. You could dip those in hummus too. How about some nuts to snack on? Little cartons of yogurt (organic if available)? I just found some organic beef jerky at Costco's...perfect for snacking too! Those are just a few of my ideas for you....I'm sure others will have lots more to add. Be safe in your travels and have fun! Hugs, Patty Lamse <wannabe_proverbs31@...> wrote: Good Moring Ladies! Guest guest
I think if you do that you should get turkey or cook some organic chicken and take it cold for sandwiches. When we go to dallas it is a thirteen hour trip and we take hard boiled organic eggs, organic carrot sticks, grapes, raisins, apples, and even bananas. (I know they are high in sugar but they are good for you!) Then we take cooked chicken cold. Also there are some good nut mixes you can get. One had cranberries, walnuts, almonds, and I think a few others, but those nuts are very good for you. Then we took alot of bottled water in a cooler. Needless to say, we ate well and I felt really good. I wasn't tempted to cheat and pick up chips, candy, etc. Good luck. HOw far a drive is it for you? Make sure to stop often to stretch your legs and drink lots of water. Also, congratulations to your son on his graduation! I bet you are proud. Guest guest
Kathy, This is a very long trip for us. Google Earth quoted us about 28 hours. Luckily, we are stoping in Indianapolis overnight to pick up Randy's brother. My three girls are going with us, which is why we are driving. As far as stopping to stretch, my bladder will make sure of that...lol Lmikat828 <mikat828@...> wrote: I think if you do that you should get turkey or cook some organic chicken and take it cold for sandwiches. I will be praying for you. Stopping lots of times to stretch will help! Then say, if he takes his LDN at 10pm in Israel, he should take it at 10pm USA time.
