Guest guest
Yes. I have been in the process of testing it in 10 of my facilities and comparing it with another gel product, Hydra-Aid. Both work about the same but I'm waiting for the final analysis and pricing. Gels are wonderful although slightly higher cost, still lower than pre-thickened beverages. The quality of gels is superior to that of powdered thickeners and has increased resident acceptance of thickened beverages. Also, a different thickening agent is used, gum agar, which is totally hydrated in the gel. Guest guest
" Also, a different thickening agent is used, gum agar, which is totally hydrated in the gel. " I just wanted to comment that guar gum can have a laxative effect, if eaten in large quantities. Some individuals with celiac disease also have problems with guar gum causing diarrhea. Guest guest
Thanks for pointing that out, since we have not had celiac residents during our testing period. I must keep that in mind before adopting a product for use. I will also check out pre-thickened products to verify which thickener is used. Guest guest
Hello, For those of you that work with thickeners (specifically Thick-It vs. Thicken-Up vs. Simply Thick), can you please comment briefly on why you prefer one thickener over another. Also, I have a question specifically about simply thick. When I've experimented with nectar- and honey-consistency, the nectar-consistency seems so thin (honey-consistency seems ok). Am I just so used to the thickness of the corn-starch based thickeners that I am wary of a product that thickens to a more appropriate consistency? Or is it really thinner than it should be? (FYI, I've thickened Ensure and water with all the above thickeners to both nectar- and honey- consistency). Thank you for your time. Guest guest
i have used both. i dont have a preference. i did have a client though who did not tolerate the simply thick (diarrhea). the nurse aides in our facility (adult day care center) who use the thickener actually prefer the thicken up. i have some clients families that prefer to use simply thick to avoid clumping. we have both available at our facility. however we use thicken up generally on site but we provide simply thick to our clients at home. margie michele drozd wrote: Hello, For those of you that work with thickeners (specifically Thick-It vs. Thicken-Up vs. Simply Thick), can you please comment briefly on why you prefer one thickener over another.
