Dear , I am very glad you joined our group. I am very sorry to hear about

your problem. Please understand that I am not a doctor. What I tell you I tell

you based on personal experience of losing my best friend in the whole world to

alcoholic liver disease. During that tribulation, I discovered that I also have

end stage liver disease. I am not in a position to give medical advice.

Ok, here is my humble opinion on what you have said. Without a NEEDLE biopsy, NO

one can tell you, nor should you assume that you are doomed. A NEEDLE biopsy is

the ONLY way to know for sure if you have end stage liver disease... Symptoms of

end stage liver disease usually do not include jaundace, or scleral icturus,

" yellow eyes " , so maybe there is a chance that your unhappy liver is just that,

unhappy. Alcoholic hepatitis can cause jaundace, and so can other chemical

causes of liver inflamation. Hepatitis is a word for an inflamed liver.

Inflamation can occur from a number of reasons. Even babies are sometimes born

with jaundace.

Pease understand that when end stage liver disease patients present with

jaundace, they are in the very late stages, or they are having hepatitis and end

stage disease at the same time.

So, you stopped imbibing on the wine. Good start. A good heart healthy diet can

help your liver, but please do not believe everything you read about meat on the

web. People with severe intractable encephalopathy are sometimes put on

temporary protien restrictions, but only temorary, as those people either die,

or get a transplant, or thier encephalopathy improves. Restricting protien can

slow down the healing of the liver. Livers NEED protien, as all your organs do.

I get this part from my own hepatologist, because I suffer from intractable mild

hepatic encephalopathy. I shy away from large serving of meat It is not helping

my liver any, and my hair falls out in clumps, and fingernails are weak, but I

have no choice. You can go to any ER for treatment if you need to. Always

remember that. I am a recovering alcoholic, and you are free to contact me at

any hour of the day. I am online 24/7 at robwalkingeagle on yahoo IM.

Please stay from all active volcanoes. The sun rose over all of us today. May it

rise over you in the morning. Love, Bobby

Subject: Hi, I'm New to this support group

I'm 63 and have cirrhosis. My father died of it. Something to do with enjoying

too many cocktails for sure. When I checked out " hemorrhoids " on the internet,

I saw it was one of the symptoms of cirrhosis... ..then I noticed I had most of

the rest of them: hair loss, red palms, yellow eyes. So I stopped the wine on

Friday. I feel better already. I have also taken Tylenol, Advil and Naprosin

all of my life for back pain...did myself in. So, no meat and so on.....no

doctor and no insurance and so on. hmmmm What to do. If I jump into a

volcano, no one will ever know I did this to myself and be ashamed of me.

Somehow, I will have to beat this before word gets out. I have been walking for

2 miles every evening too and eating salads, etc. I really do feel better in 5

days. Does anyone have a cookbook for me? Nice to have someone to talk to.

Hi Bobby,   Many thanks for the info and words of encouragement!  Do you know if

I can buy Lactulose in a health food store?  Since I have to wait a year and a

half for Medicare, I will attempt to treat myself.  Thanks again,

Hi Susie my name is sandra my husband has end stage liver disease and is

waiting. his meld is 18...Susie i am sorry for the problems you are having and

pray that time will help. continue to take care of your self healthy life stile

choices are the best you can do for your self now. I do want to ask, why do you

want to take lactulose? Now group correct me please if i am wrong and

misinformed but the reason folks with esld use this product is thru chemical

break downs lactlouse eventually binds and or draws off the elevated ammonia

that contributes to encephalopathy the " foggy headiness " which in sever cases

leads to coma. I did read that lactulose is used in obstructive jaundice that is

jaundice that is caused by a obstruction blocking of bile flow.

I am so glad you are here. sandra

I think that lactulose is only available by prescription. Please say why you

think you need it? Not to be nosy. I am curious.

It is kind of important, because lactulose is a very potent laxitive, and sould

be used under a doctors care. There is a misconception that since it is just a

simple combination of two semi non digestible sugars, that it is not dangerous.

I was hospitalized two summers ago for lactulose unduced pneumatosis coli, and

followed by a surgeon for the better part of a week as an inpatient. If you

drink a good amount of water, and eat plenty of bran and prunes every single

day, you will get one of the benefits of lactulose, but I do think you would

need the acid causing effect of lactobacillus to get the chemical reaction. It

is entirely possible you could achieve this by eating something like

acidophilus, or perhaps an active yogurt. one goal with lactulose is to creat an

acid environment, which can help with the elimination of ammonia, and cause harm

to unwanted bacteria, which are responsible for ammonia in the first place.

These are e-coli, and staph. So,

that is my two cents. do you have symptoms of encephalopathy? Love, Bobby

I'm sorry you cried when you took lactulose. I used to give it to Ardis straight

up, but now that I have to take it, I drink it with juice. I never knew you

could mix it like that. I got paid back when I was in the hospital, they wanted

me to be NPO, so I had to take the lactulose straight. No water to even wash it

down. Hugs, Lyncia. Love, Bobby

misinformed but the reason folks with esld use this product is thru chemical

break downs lactlouse eventually binds and or draws off the elevated ammonia

that contributes to encephalopathy the " foggy headiness " which in sever cases

leads to coma. I did read that lactulose is used in obstructive jaundice that is

jaundice that is caused by a obstruction blocking of bile flow.

I am so glad you are here. sandra

Hi Bobby, Many thanks for the info and words of encouragement! Do you know if

I can buy Lactulose in a health food store? Since I have to wait a year and a

half for Medicare, I will attempt to treat myself. Thanks again,

Love, Bobby

I'm 63 and have cirrhosis. My father died of it. Something to do with enjoying

too many cocktails for sure. When I checked out " hemorrhoids " on the internet, I

saw it was one of the symptoms of cirrhosis... ..then I noticed I had most of

the rest of them: hair loss, red palms, yellow eyes. So I stopped the wine on

Friday. I feel better already. I have also taken Tylenol, Advil and Naprosin all

of my life for back pain...did myself in. So, no meat and so on.....no doctor

and no insurance and so on. hmmmm What to do. If I jump into a volcano, no one

will ever know I did this to myself and be ashamed of me. Somehow, I will have

to beat this before word gets out. I have been walking for 2 miles every evening

too and eating salads, etc. I really do feel better in 5 days. Does anyone have

a cookbook for me? Nice to have someone to talk to. , , NV

Thank you.  The first time no one told me to be near the restroom and I didn't

make it and my son had to clean me up because I was so confused.  I love to take

it now for the results of how I feel later, but given a choice and that would be

after transplant (at least ... I am not for sure if you take it then).

Get some sleep kind sir!

Lots of hugs and kisses to everyone.

Thanks, I don't want confusion because of ammonia. I think it's a

laxative you can regulate. love,

Hi, thanks.  Umm no symptoms, I just thought as a precaution of back up toxic

poisoning.  Yes, water and prunes....probably better.  Thanks,

Love, Bobby
