To Susie, Vicki, , and everyone who has written to me.....

You guys have saved my life........I am not being over dramatic here....My

Diabetes Solution arrived this morning and so far I haven't been able to

put it down....

WOW!!!! At first I skimmed through it just to see what I would have to be

eating and it dosen't seem too bad, so then I was encouraged to start at

the beginnning and study it properly....It will take a little while to sink

in, but I'm sure to have some questions when it does.....I also ordered

Protien Power and the June Biermann and Barbara Toohey book and I had

e-mail on Friday to tell me they will be arriving tomorrow. (Tuesday) A

couple of weeks ago on advise from Susie I subscribed to their web site too

and I can't wait until that is ready to go.

I am very excited about all of this because I have been so ill for so long,

and do not want to end up like my mother...Mum is 75 years of age, type 2

as I am, has 3 toes remaining due to amputations, can barely walk because

her legs are just covered with ulcers, is legally blind.....She also has

other complications too...I have been so scared that this would be my fate

too....The Doctors in the country area where I live are quite happy if I

keep my fasting BG at about 10 mml/l.....I tried to talk to my Doctor last

week about low-carbing....I left the doctor's office in tears....she made

me feel like I was an idiot in wanting to do anything for myself.... Oh

well, I'll show her....It's a pity that I have to go back but I need her to

prescribe my medications etc.

Anyway folks...It looks like it's me, you and Dr.Bernstein....

Thanks again

Yes, she's inspiring isn't she? I used to admire her posts on MHD, but was

always a little scared to post there in case I got flamed....I can't get

over how she always has an encouraging word for everyone.... Yet I imagine

things are not easy for her either....

Two wonderful things have happened to me in the last 6 months....One was my

husband's recovery from a very severe mental illness, he almost died, but

is now back at work and loving life. The second was my coming across, quite

by accident, the wonderful people on this list....I have also subscribed to

the LCD list too and am learning from the folks there too...It seems that

wherever Susie goes she makes it a better place, and that's a real

achievement in my books....

Dear ,

Sounds like your mother and mine went to the same school....I was just

talking to my mother on the phone and she was complaining about a very sore

back which developed this afternoon....I offered my sympathy and tried to

help, then she let out what she has been eating for the last 3 days....To

top it off she had a donut type bun, filled with jam and cream, for luch

today. (Sigh) Then she said that it was ok because she had used extra

insulin and taken an extra metformin.

Unfortunately I don't have much choice of Doctors, there are only two who

are a married couple....They tend to follow each other in thought....The

neares endocronologist is 200 miles away and follows the food

pyramid....(The Diabetes Assoc. Australia) model..... They seem to be very

conservative.....She argued with me....and forbade me to low carb....I told

her that was ok....I guess I'll just have to show her.....

Your results are really good. (April H1AC almost 10 and July results 5.4)

Very, very inspiring.....

Don't know the carb count of spaghetti squash. It's pretty good stuff

though....I grew some last Summer and it was so easy to grow....I had so

many that I tooks many of them to the local nursing home....I hope the

residents liked it..... It's certainly fun to cook....no fuss.

Rhonda,

I was very lucky and found this list right at the time I was diagnosed.

I was so confused in what to eat. I started eating low carb right away

and my BG's came down almost immediately. I was so ignorant of the

disease even though my mother died of complications. She used to tell us

that she could cheat and cover it with insulin. Of course, we believed

her. I thought that carbs were good for me at the beginning. I have been

low carbing since April and whenever I see my BG creep up a tad, reality

hits me and I reevaluate what I have been eating and get " into " my

exercise program again. I am so grateful that it works for me. Listen to

Susie because, believe me, she knows what is going on and what to do.

She is better than my doctor who just can't understand what I am doing

but loves the numbers. (April H1AC almost 10 and July results 5.4)

This is an abrupt change in subject but I cannot find the carb count of

spaghetti squash. I tried it last night and it was fantastic. I had

about 1/2 cup because I did not want to overdo when I did not know the

count. It is not listed in my two carb counter books. I am sure it is

under another name and I do not know that. Whoever suggested the squash,

thank you---it is delicious and easy to prepare.

Rhonda,

I just don't know what to tell you about your mother. It is

disheartening to say the least. I just don't know why some people do not

try to do the best they can with diabetes. Who are they fooling? I hope

I never get into that frame of mind. Maybe I saw the horrible effects of

the disease ravage my mother but I am trying to be careful. At least at

this point we have some options to control it. From being a member of

this list, I read posts about diabetes going out of whack for no reason

at all and these people do their best to keep it in control. I am

fortunate at this point and I know it. I also used to watch my mother

eat blatantly horrible foods and I also watched it take it's toll on her

body. I know these effects could happen anyway but why push it? Believe

me, no chocolate cake or donut is worth my life--and there is alot to

eat out there.

I talk to alot of people and never hide the fact that I am diabetic. You

can't imagine how many people I have found who have been diagnosed

recently. It is amazing. I guess it is our lifestyle and our " fast food "

generation that has made it more prevalent.

I ate the spaghetti squash with 1 tbls. spaghetti sauce (lowest carb and

sugar I could find brand) and it was delicious. I have Mastercook and I

will check it to see if I can get a carb count and let you know. I can't

wait until later to eat more. Yum. What do you put on it?

I also second what Rhonda said. Susie has brought smiles to my

face and knowledge to my head.

A mere 10 grams of carbs per cup - less 2.2 grams of fiber. This stuff is

ideal for diabetics, kiddos.

This may sound sort of goofy, but I do try to figure which people I meet are

diabetics. I have noticed (call me goofy) that, in general, type 2's have

the nicest skin! Very smooth-looking skin - but with lots of little white

scars from old cuts and sores that didn't heal as soon as they could. And

when I engage them in conversation, they can wax poetic about carbohydrates

they have known and loved. Last week I was standing in the potato fields

outside of Orland, Indiana, talking to this redhead from the Midwest. He had

all the signs: smooth skin, the little scars, and then he mentioned a

stubborn, puzzling infection from a cut on his arm, and then he went on for

about an hour about cinnamon buns and other high-carb foods, and I finally

just blurted out, " Are you a diabetic too? " And - sure enough - he had been

on provisional status with his CDL (commercial driver's license) because

there had been so much glucose in his urine specimen at a recent DOT (Dept.

of Transportaiton) physical. (We have to pass a physical every two years,

and carry the DOT card with us, and be subject to random drug tests, etc.)

He wasn't much interested in hearing about low-carbing. Oh well ... I tried.

I think making dietary changes to improve control is something that must be

thought over a long time. It took me about six months of haunting various

low-carb groups and questioning before I could believe it would really work.

1/2 Cup of spaghetti squash has 5.0 grams CHO, according to Netzer.

Mum knows what she is suposed to eat.....She just has never wanted to make

the effort....Her mother, my Grandmother, was a Type 2 as well....She lived

until she was 92 years of age with absolutely no complications....Mind you

she wasn't diagnosed until her mid 70's....Perhaps mum didn't believe there

would be any complications for her either...and now she just dosen't

care.....

> I talk to alot of people and never hide the fact that I am diabetic.

This list are the people I talk to about it as I am fairly isolated here

and there are not many people to talk to...However even in this small

community there seems to be quite a few diabetics.

Like you I have uses spag. sauce, but I also like it with a lo-carb curry,

or stroganoff (sp) I have even had it with finely chopped mixed

salad....however I think my favourite is a mushroom and onion sauce. (Maybe

you call it gravy)
