OMG , that is absolutely terrifying.

What the hell was that wretched spider doing in her diaper, and how did it

die?

Poor, poor thing!!!!!!

I hope she feels better soon. I can't imagine the horror you must have

felt. Isn't there anything more that they can do to fight spider bites?

Here are a few more details for you:

Our theory is that brought the creature in on his pant's leg. She got it

when she gave him a hug around his legs. She cried " Ow! Bumblebee! Bumblebee! "

and then continued crying for hours. , not having any idea what was the

matter, tried drawing pictures of bumblebees to see if that was what she wanted.

Of course that didn't help at all and she was more sad. He tried candy and coke

and cuddles; nothing was helping her or making her stop crying.

Greilyn had been sick with a stomach flu the night before. All morning she'd

had diarrhea and wasn't feeling really great. So he thought, as I would have,

that she just wasn't feeling good - related to being sick earlier.

When I got home (from Marilla's Language Therapy) I consoled her for another 45

minutes before trying to distract her with a trip to the potty. I removed her

diaper, set her on the potty, then looked inside the diaper. There was a dead

black widow spider inside the diaper.

I put a fresh diaper on her and tore out of the house to the hospital.

The bites were not visible the first day because the area was all pink. The

area wasn't swollen so at first the doctor didn't believe she was bitten (the

evidence of incessant crying and dead spider in the diaper was not compelling

enough, apparently). When they tried to give her an IV (for fluids and

medicines for whatever the doctor thought really was wrong with her), Greilyn

did not even flinch from the needle stick. Then she had to be stuck four more

times because they were not able to get a good vein. She did not flinch for any

of them. She whimpered a little, but didn't struggle, for the last two sticks

because the nurse just started wiggling the needle around trying to hit the

vein. The doctor then decided that maybe something really was wrong with the

baby and had her admitted.

And still I have managed to avoid the unbelievably long version.

I didn't end with " Smiles " before because I was also sending the letter to

several of my other friends and most of them know the names of my husband and

children. ;-) This one is just for you guys. :-) Also, it just didn't seem

right. It doesn't seem right now, either, but I will anyway.... when I get to

that part.

I hope she didn't suffer from hallucinations! I did not know that might be one

of the symptoms. She came out of her pain for just a moment on Friday to

respond to a Dumbo commercial on TV. She said, " Funny elephant. " and then went

right back to just laying in my arms and wanting to nurse.

She spent almost the whole time in my arms. Nursing, mostly, and sleeping. She

got sad when I put her down and would cry. When she started feeling better she

wanted to " walk " . This means she wanted me to hold her high on my shoulder so

she could cuddle in and I walked around the nurses' stations. She couldn't play

in the playroom and she could barely stand. She wanted to play, but she just

couldn't. She couldn't stand up very well; she couldn't even move the beads on

the Busy Beads toy.

The first night they gave her Demerol in the ER and again late at night so she

could sleep for a little while. She slept alone for about 20 minutes and then I

had to climb into bed with her so she could sleep. She slept only twenty to

thirty minutes at a time. She pulled the IV out at about 2:30 am.

There, now. Much more and I will just dust off the longer version which

includes the details about the ER doctor's fake smile (very bad fake smile) and

the facts about nurses and doctors NOT WEARING GLOVES OR WASHING THEIR HANDS

when tending to the baby. IVs were taken without gloves. Blood work was taken

with gloves.... the index finger cut out so that he could feel the skin better.

Of course, this is a whole other rant and I will go into that with very little

prompting. I'll even tell their methods of cleaning up vomit......

I think it just crawled into her diaper looking for the warmest place to hide.

Then she probably hit her diaper when she felt something moving, and it bit her.

Then she probably hit some more and it bit some more and she killed it.... beat

it to death, I hope.

Before I took her to the potty I noticed that her diaper had been torn in two

places. " It looks like something snagged the hell out of that diaper. Do you

have any idea what happened? " I asked my husband. He had no idea.

It bothers me that we both had perfectly good clues and it still took us so long

to figure out what had happened.

They have some anti-venom for black widow spider bites, but the cure is often

worse than the disease - especially on little ones. They decided to just go

with keeping her hydrated and giving her pain meds.

I was just relieved to learn that black widow spider bites are not normally

considered deadly. I didn't know that. I thought one bite equals death for

anyone. it would have been nice to know that BEFORE she was bit. My worst

panic was caused by that erroneous belief. All the way to the hospital I was

imagining the worst.... and fighting my own imagination to " shut up and just

let's get to the hospital and worry about the worst later. "

Relief? Calm? Oh yes. I am much better now.

I did mention the new patch of grey, right?

matter, would have done anything different than you did. This was a FREAK

incident that is DEFINITELY not covered in any parenting manuals.

You are right, of course. I spent the first night in the hospital trying to

comfort because he kept crying about how he is a bad daddy that didn't

protect his child. I almost reached the point where I wanted to yell, " I have

other things to worry about than stroking your ego at this time! "

So I should have known better than to feel guilty after the fact. But when I

was writing it out, the clues just seemed so obvious from this nice safe

distance of after the fact. She didn't say, " there's a spider in my diaper! "

But she did say, " bumblebee " and " ow " and she beat the hell out of her diaper

while crying (that happened when I was not home and was pre-occupied with

the cable guy). But, you are right. Two year olds DO cry about everything.

and, as I told repeatedly the night it happened, there was no way to have

guessed correctly from the clues... especially when there was the fact of

previous stomach sickness earlier that same day.

Thank you Jacquie. You nipped that guilt trip right in the bud. (I like to

save my guilt trips until after the crisis is over, you know)

What a way to spend your birthdays!

I am happy that things turned out well enough for you to tell us what

happened. I think that a two year old is very likely to forget this whole

thing, and may only remember bits based on the story she hears in the future.

I remember a little of the sailboat capsize when I was 3, most is from what I

have been told happened, and I picture it accordingly.

I, for one, thought black widow bites were deadly, especially for a baby.

Thanks for setting us straight about that, I am spreading the word.

When I was a kid, I was playing and fell into the corner of the patio where

there was a black widow nest. I wasn't bit (maybe mom already had the

exterminator spray there, but I can't remember) but to this day, black widows

are one of the few things I'm afraid of.
