I had to give up cross stitch. I stick my fingers enough intentionally

without doing it in the process of a fun activity. <grin> Sorry, just

couldn't resist. Lack of sleep is a wonderful thing, isn't it?

:

You got alot of responses to your question about blurred vision and how it

related to diabetes. Let me give you my experience.

Never had eye problems. Suddenly in August of 1987 my vision went blurry--out

of focus. I was aboard an aircraft carrier in the Atlantic Ocean and they

thought it serious enought to 'fly' me off by plane. I was examined by the

top specialist at Naval Hospital in Portsmouth Virginia. He spent a whole

after noon and evening with me (he still is my eye doctor to this day).

Anyway, he told me I had the start of diabetic disease of the eyes. My type

was called retinopathy. He explained all about the blood vessels in the back

of the eye 'leaking' and what could be done to prevent it. I asked him how do

I get rid of the bluryness? The 'out of focus' I see? The first thing he

said to me was: 'YOU MUST MAINTAIN CONTROL OF YOUR BLOOD SUGAR LEVELS. " He

said if you maintained your blood sugar levels, your eye sight would improve.

By doing this you will slow down the damage to your eyes from diabetes--you

couldn't stop it but you could slow it 'way' down.

So , your eyes could be telling you something you already know: You have

diabetes. Go to an Ophthalmologist--someone who specializes in eye disease.

Let him look in the back of your eyes and see what he finds. My eyes went

blurry and out off focus in 1987. The blurred vision never got better. I had

laser treatment to seal off the blood vessels in the back of each eye in 1997.

My diabetic eye disease has spread to my good right eye and now when I try to

read or look at something, it is like looking through a thin cloud of fog.

Somedays are better than others. And I try to keep in Control of my blood

sugar levels because each day is anothe day of sight. Tomorrow I might not be

able to see anything.

All the other replys you had did say to watch your blood sugar levels. I

agree but you also should have a specialists look at your eyes to see if any

damage has been done. If I remember correctly, you have only been a diabetic

for a short period of time; so there might not be any damage discovered. But

it doesn't hurt to see.

God's Speed.

,

I wear glasses, however before i was diagnosed i could hardly read my

computer screen with them on. Now that I am being treated with tablets

my vision has cleared so much that i dont need my glasses at all!!!!

My specialist told me that the reason for this is, the shape of your

lens in your eye and how well you can see is dependent on how hydrated

you are. If you have been dehydrated (i was severely dehydrated) then

that could be the reason why your vision changes.

Hi,

Before I was diagnosed with diabetes I experienced my sight was blurred.

After starting treatment with tablets, the sight became clear again.

However, now I sometimes experience that the sight gets blurred again. I

have a suspicion that it may be related to when I eat to much and are

not keeping the diet as I should. Is this a normal symptom - should it

be taken serious, or is it just normal for a diabetic that the sight is

sometimes clear, sometimes blurred, even when under treatment?

Hello Tehanne,

Thank you the mail and it's good to hear about the positive effect of your

tablet treatment on your sight. It must have been like a miracle to be able to

see without your glasses again!

I was diagnosed with (light) glaucoma just after I was diagnosed with diabetes

(II - in jan. 99). I also had

problems with a toe infection that wouldn't dissapear. The doctor therefore told

me that many of the symptoms would dissapear if I controlled the bg and lost

some weight. He emphazised that it was necessary to loose weight to avoid future

complications.

I didn't know that dehydration could affect the sight.

Robin, thank you for your tips. In about 2 weeks I am to go at hospital and be

investigated by doctors and nurses that specialize in diabetes. I will tell them

about the eye-symptoms. Maybe it is a sign that I have diabetic disease in my

eyes. Again, thank you.

Oluf, thank you for your mail. The funny thing, however, is that my bg has been

within the borders (3mmol/10mmol) for the last two months. I understand from

some of the members that the blurred vision might

be due to the bg being out of control, but it isn't. Regarding dehydration,

maybe I should drink some more water. I have noticed that I drink much lesser

water now than I did just a few weeks ago, so it may contribute to the problem.

- In a few weeks I will go to the hospital to be examined by doctors and nurses.

- As you may know, - here in Denmark, when a person is diagnosed with diabetes,

after a while, they are called to be examined at the hospital. Again, thank you

for your advice.

I didn't answer the question, because I am as curious as you relating to my

blurred vision. This last year has been bad in regards to my vision.
