Thanks BJ!

That is her saving grace. She's 13 and many worthy boys like her.

They don't seem to care that she never pays any attention to them

or anyone else. At least she doesn't shun them just because she's

an obnoxious teenager. Oooh, " Teenager " that word is still very

strange to me. She just turned 13 in August.

I did have one question for everyone. If you are told your

special kid needs braces, do you put them through that?

Three years ago I went for an evaluation and of course the

orthodontist said she needed them. They recommended

four teeth pulled. I went to the puller, and they told me

they would only work if she was totally sedated. From

the time she was little, I would not allow her to be sedated.

(I understand there is risk with total sedation, and that's

just my thing about it.)

I opted out of the $800 (my cost w/insurance) teeth pull.

Now you see her top teeth are pretty good. Why put an

autistic kid through this? Would any of you?

And last, I have a gripe. Just got billed for the ASA

national dues, which I thought I paid in June to my

local chapter here in LA. Apparently, they didn't send

the dues to the national. Just ticked off is all.

Thanks Thea!

It was my understanding that this guy beneath the flag was

the official parents of autism mascot! He shows truth and

patriotism proudly displaying his flag. We moms need

some inspiration, and I think " Uncle Samson " there

embodies our spirit.

How was that for some of the biggest BS you have ever read?

Thanks Jacquie, I just keep thinking that braces are a necessity. Although

we have no income, things will soon return to normal soon. Her dentist is

also a past president of the Autism Society of Los Angeles, and has an older

son who is non-verbal, so he was the best choice for working with her, he is

wonderful. Anyway, he keeps suggesting braces, and I am kinda thinking that

for a kid who just brushing her teeth is a challenge, (she hates the feeling,

it hurts) expecting her to keep braces clean is kinda ridiculous, not to

mention the pain of adjustment.

I never had braces myself, I am the youngest of five, so is my husband. But

in our neck of the woods they are a kinda status symbol, not that I play the

status game. Hey, I don't even own an SUV or a minivan! I have a purple

1971 Dodge challenger convertible I drive. Can't operate the top when

Aislynn is around, she holds her ears and moans.

Somehow, I always end up talking about my car, I am hopeless.

Barb,

Aislynn is very beautiful! Love the picture.

BTW, I did get inspired looking at good old " Uncle Samson! " :)

Barb, when I was younger I had hideously crooked teeth, but my parents couldn't

afford the orthodontist's bill for braces. I had four teeth pulled, and my

teeth are almost straight now. Crooked enough that I couldn't be a TV

announcer, but beyond that pretty much unnoticable.

I vote no braces.

My parents could not afford them when I was younger either. I have two

teeth that stick out. Most kids think I look like a vampire. Otherwise, no

one seems to notice much. Unless she absolutely needs them, I would just go

for pulling a few and letting them be. Why put yourself or her through that

if you don't have to?

Exactly.

One night about 3 weeks ago we pulled 4 teeth that were loose!

Her baby teeth don't get pushed out, and this was necessary

because she wasn't brushing or eating. She screamed and

howled so loud, we had to close up all the windows.

It sounded like bloody murder.

Of course, some of you have neighbors that already

know you are trying to kill your kids. (c:

Mine just don't know that yet.
