We give our donors a letter for them to give outside facilities that explains how to send the claims to us for payment. If a donor does receives a bill we have them send it to us and we pay it.

I have a living donor that has received some billing from outside our hospital for services related to donation. His dos was 9-22-10.We NEVER ask our living donors for insurance and tell them NOT to present any personal insurance to anyone, but of course somewhere along the line he either gave them his insurance info or one of the providers already had the info and now he is screaming conspiracy even though his insurance denied. What methods do other centers use to insure no billing goes to a donors insurance? Also, if the donor gets a bill from outside your center, how do you handle that?ThanksWWhitney Folsom, TFCETMC Transplant Program1100 E Lake St ste 340Tyler, TX 75701 phone faxwlfolsom@...===========================================================This message is confidential, intended onlyfor the named recipient(s) and may containinformation that is privileged or exempt fromdisclosure under applicable law. Where does the " rule " come from that living donors can not be charged for

donation? I am having trouble convincing a couple of offices that they can not

bill a living donor.

Thanks

Same concept as deceased donors. I will look for something more significant to share when I am back on my computer. I think that Section 1885 os the SS act has the answer. It should be in the TFCA materials. Hi Whitney,The basis of the “rule” is from the Social Security Act. Section 1881(d) of the ACT is attached. It basically indicates that a kidney donor is to be treated as if they had Medicare Parts A and B without regard to deductibles coinsurance or premium and their costs are to be handled in accordance with regulations put forth by the Administrator. Cost Reporting instructions indicated that the charges are to go on D-6 Part I for proper cost finding and reimbursement. Additionally, while deceased donor charges are billed to the OPO, in a similar manner the deceased donor is not to be “balance” billed. Hope this helps,Thanks,Bill From: TxFinancialCoordinators [mailto:TxFinancialCoordinators ] On Behalf Of Whitney FolsomSent: Wednesday, May 11, 2011 11:39 AMTo: TxFinancialCoordinators Subject: Living Donors Where does the " rule " come from that living donors can not be charged for donation?
