Witch Nada (Slightly off-topic)

I just saw a line in someone's post which made me do a double-take.

the line was: " I am [a] child of a BPD Hermit/Witch Nada... " I

realize that this is a term used in a book that many people on this

site have read, and i further understand that when the author uses the

word " Witch, " they are not referring to members of the (legally

recognized) religions of Witchcraft and Wicca.

However, as a long-time and proud member of those religions myself, in

other words, a Witch, I take HUGE exception to the use of this term as

a perjorative.

Witchcraft is a positive, vibrant, life-affirming spiritual path which

honors healing, in individuals and in the world. As a Witch, it makes

me sad when i see the term used as a negative, derogatory term. I am

sure there must be another term that could mean the same thing that

this author was trying to say, without accidentally referring to

members of a minority religion. I am not trying to change how you

speak, and i certainly don't hold the use of this word against anyone

personally. I am simply encouraging you to think about how this word

sounds to those of us here who are Witches.

Thanks for listening,

You aren't the only one. ;)

I agree, there must be a better term out there to use.

Dear BBW,

Thank you for composing these thoughts in such a considerate,

effective manner. We certainly owe you the same respect. As you

well are aware, language is constantly evolving, and words we used

one way, one day, will prove inappropriate the next. I like to hope

we are moving forward.

On a lighter note, I often wish I could title my nada an even more

inappropriate *itch word!

brightbluewings,

Thank you for bringing this to my attention. Please know that I did

not mean any disrespect I was simply repeating a label I came to

know after reading UBM. I will certainly be more mindful of labels

in the future. Thanks for your understanding and no hard feelings?!

I know you meant no harm, and i have no hard feelings! I was never

offended by *your* using the word, just the general use of it. hope

that makes sense, and thanks for understanding my feelings on the

matter. =^)

I'm glad you recognize this is NOT a personal attack on you or your

faith. I would highly recommend getting and reading the book,

Understanding the Borderline Mother, as a child of a borderline as

there's only two books we know of out there on growing up w a BP

parent and UMB is one of them. Additionally, I also have to face

these issues w/being 1/8 Native American and not getting upset by

things like Jeep Grand Cherokee, the Iroquois Apartments, the FSU

Seminoles, and myriad other terms that throw my people into a

negative light. I will not, however, tolerate the use of the

word 'squaw' in my presence and if people use it inadvertantly not

knowing the true meaning, I take the opportunity to teach vs get

offended. Its literal meaning is one of the most vulgar English words

in our lexicon used to describe a female's private parts. It has,

fortunately, gone the way of the dinosaur.

Sorry you take this as a personal affront. It is not meant in the

context of Wicca. In fact for these reasons and many more the owners

of this message board have asked that religious references be kept to

a minimum. Too many KOs have had bad experiences w/religions an so

the discussion of religion is not encouraged (well we can say what

works for us and what helps, but not to the point where it seems

coercive or combative). I can only assure you that when we use the

term 'witch' it is not a reference to your religious faith anymore

than all queens are negative (though honestly I see history has

painted your religion negatively. I would have a chip on my shoulder

too and I do have one somewhat today for the persecution of my faith

but I don't want to discuss it here just b/c I like to keep things

more about this mental illness vs my faith).

>

This is a blanketed statement that could be construed as rather

persuasive and it is your opinion and experience. Please keep it as

such w/terms like 'my experience' or 'I think' or 'I feel' like you

have up to now. How offended would you or others feel if I said

something to the effect of 'Christianity is a positive, vibrant, life-

affirming spiritual path which honors healing, in individuals and the

world'? While that may be my personal truth and experience, I also

understand others have not had such a positive experience

w/Christianity and the borderline mother. Additionally, I did have a

very bad experience w/a former co-worker who was Wiccan and so I

could take offense at this statement should I chose. As it is, I've

also had other good friends who are Wiccan and see that individuals

differ greatly inside of religions more so than between religious

catagories.

As a Witch, it makes

> me sad when i see the term used as a negative, derogatory term. I

am

> sure there must be another term that could mean the same thing that

> this author was trying to say, without accidentally referring to

> members of a minority religion.

I'm sure it does. I can only imagine if you have kids, it will be

hard to explain so many of the children's fairytales and the

depiction of witches in them as well as Halloween and all kinds of

things like that. If it makes you feel any better w/regards to being

on this board and the term witch, please also note the term 'Oz' is

used a lot. In fact when the list comes out every so often about

rules and abbreviations, it usually says 'Oz' at the top. This refers

to the movie the Wizard of Oz as that's what it is like living w/a BP

mom...Oz. I think that movie puts witches in a more well-rounded

light in so far as there being a good witch, Glenda, and then the

Wicked Witch of the West. People who've seen that movie know that

there's good witches. Additionally, you must be happy about the new

Harry Potter craze as that too depicts witches and wizards in a more

positive light.

I am not trying to change how you

> speak, and i certainly don't hold the use of this word against

anyone

> personally.

I'm glad you stated this as we've got 4-5 years of using this term on

this board to describe something that has little to do w/you

personally but much more about the different faces of this mental

illness. I suppose when society at large decides to change its views

and lexicon w/regards to witches, then more people will follow suit

w/alternative names. Perhaps 'little Hitlers' or something. I don't

really know. I just know it would be asking too much for us KOs to

change the usage of this term. For many, it would be like the

proverbial eggshells we've all been walking on w/our nadas- being so

conscious of using a word that means a vastly different thing that

your religion that it would create a sense of guilt and paranoia that

should not be on this board w/this topic that most have felt already

their entire lives. Though of course, I do appreciate your reality

and your religion as well. I just think it would be asking too much

for KOs to throw this term as it has no religious affiliation in our

context. I think we all agree on that. Though of course, we could

take a poll and make sure that is the case so that you don't feel in

the slightest way slighted. I'm hoping, however, that more people

give positive feedback that this is the case- not a religious issue

vs a mental health issue.

I am simply encouraging you to think about how this word

> sounds to those of us here who are Witches.\

Yes, I have thought about it though I hadn't thought about it before

as a KO and the usage here. I know what I mean here when I use this

term and therefore I also know I mean no offense to you anymore than

I will assume if you watch any sporting event w/Native American names

on them, I will not take it personally or the car you drive being

part of my ancestry name if it is associated. I don't take too much

personally from people here as I think most people are well intended

though of course I do not give the same charity of motivation

w/regards to my FOO. Thank you, however, for sharing your feelings

and reality. I think that it should be validated and accepted though

I don't see how we could come to a compromise on this situation

w/chaning lexicon/verbage though I do think you are entitled to point

out the differences between your religion and the negative rap

witches have gotten. I think you deserve to be heard though I also

think this board should be fairly religious free. I do understand to

lesser degrees your point and appreciate your desire to make people

aware of subtleties that go under the radar in society at large.

Thanks for taking the time to share your information about your faith

as well as your feelings about your faith being thrown into a

negative light. I think people grow by sharing in a safe and secure

environment where they trust others care and will listen. As for my

part, consider your message very much heard.

Best wishes,

Kerrie

BBB, Kerrie and Everyone,

I support not deliberately offending anyone here.

Thank you for helping to educate me about this and

your feelings.
