Is it allowable to have an ambulance transport a patient to a transplant center if called in for a deceased donor kidney transplant? The patient lives hours away and has to have transportation arranged ahead of time for various appointments and such. But, in a situation where a kidney may be offered in the middle of the night, would it be acceptable to arrange an ambulance to bring the patient in? And, is this an allowable cost on the cost report? Thanks for your input! Guest guest
Sara, I am not sure if it is an allowable expense on the cost report but i can tell you from experience that most health plans will not cover when coming in for a kidney transplant as the time from procurement to transplant is much longer than the other organs allowing a patient to get to the facility and it isn't considered medically necessary. Many plans wil cover for other organs since the lead time to transplant is short. ________________________________ From: TxFinancialCoordinators [TxFinancialCoordinators ] On Behalf Of Danner, Sara [danner.sara@...] Sent: Monday, January 10, 2011 5:29 PM To: TxFinancialCoordinators Subject: RE: Allowable Cost??? Guest guest
I dont believe it would be an allowable cost. In our center, the patients with medicaid transport have to have someone that will bring them in when they receive the call to come in for the transplant. Guest guest
When we identify a situation like this our transplant social worker meets with the patient & family to discuss the need for a “patient advocate” or advocates who can and will provide the support that the patient will need after transplant. Guest guest
Hi Sara,I am sorry that it took a while, I had to look it up. Travel costs to the hospital are not allowable. Please see the section pasted below: 140.16 - Noncovered Transplant Related Items and Services(Rev. 1, 10-01-03)A3-3178.17The following list represents some of the transplant related items and services which are not covered and for which no program payment can be made:Travel, room, and board expenses incurred by a live donor;Travel, room, and board expenses (to any transplant center) incurred by the recipient;Reimbursement for the kidney itself when the live donor or the cadaver donor’s next of kin sells the kidney;Transportation of the potential cadaveric donor to the transplant hospital (only transportation of the organ is reimbursable as part of the organ procurement charge); orPronouncement of death and burial expenses for the cadaveric donor. I have also included the Intermediary Manual Section that contains it. Hope this helps,Thanks,Bill From: TxFinancialCoordinators [mailto:TxFinancialCoordinators ] On Behalf Of Danner, SaraSent: Monday, January 10, 2011 8:30 PMTo: TxFinancialCoordinators Subject: RE: Allowable Cost???
