Guest guest
Dear , You said: <<My cousin was rushed to the hospital Thursday having a seizure, shakes, and vomiting. He was on 125mg. twice daily for approx. 18 years. His doctor took him off cold turkey the beginning of last Decemeber. Any information would be very helpful as I haven't been able to find much on the net about withdrawing cold turkey>> ** Why was he initially given this drug? It is approved for use in the treatment of manic episodes associated with bipolar disorder, in people with seizure disorders, and for prophylactic treatment of migraines. From a professionally recognized site, F.A. ' DrugGuide.com http://www.drugguide.com/monograph_library/psychotropic_drugs/valproates.htm " Instruct patient to take medication exactly as directed. If a dose is missed on a once-a-day schedule, it should be taken as soon as remembered that day. If on a multiple-dose schedule, patient should take it within 6 hr of the scheduled time, then space remaining doses throughout the remainder of the day. Abrupt withdrawal may lead to status epilepticus. " ** I have to say I don't think you'll get anyone to correlate this seizure with going cold turkey almost 4 months ago. Guest guest
Thank you for the web site information. Josh was put on it as part of his treatment as he has Cerebral Palsy. He has been in and out of hospital for different ailments since stopping this drug. This is not his first seizure. However it is the first one that lasted over five hours. Although it was not classed as a grand mal. They take all kinds of exrays and cat scans but can never find nothing wrong. In my reading for my own withdrawal I have read that sometimes symptoms such as these have lasted up to six months for some people. > Dear , > > > You said: > > > <<My cousin was rushed to the hospital Thursday having a > seizure, shakes, and vomiting. Had I known there was a history of seizures following discontinuation of Depakote I would have definitely considered it related to the abrupt discontinuance of the drug. Josh is in my thoughts and prayers. Regards,
