Remember with Tricare is the

sponsor is active duty he/she is only required to apply for Medicare part A .

if the sponsor is not active duty then he/she is required to have both parts A

& B of Medicare. Sponsor must sign up for Medicare at first sign of

eligibility. Hope this helps

Good Morning,

Quick question

.. . . If a patient has Tricare prime and is not wanting to sign up for Medicare

when eligible, it is my understanding that Tricare mandates you to sign

up for Medicare Part A & B because Medicare becomes primary from the date

they are eligible. Is this correct?

The only time a Tricare Prime patient would not have to sign up

for Medicare A & B is if the service member is ACTIVE DUTY. They only have

to take Part A. If they are retired they MUST sign up for Medicare A & B

or their Tricare becomes a policy that only allows them to receive care on

base.

This also includes disabilities before aged 65, in that case, pt

would need to sign up for Medicare A & B but is not required to sign up for

I sent a patient I had to Social Services and she qualified for

Medicaid. They bought her into the Medicare B and it worked out.

Yes, this

is correct. I have a patient in that situation who only signed up for Part A,

so Tricare will not pay any of her claims. So basically she has no insurance

coverage until she applies in November for Part B and it becomes active January

201.

This is true. If the patient is entitled to medicare, they must enroll in

Medicare A and B or loose their Tricare Benefits as well.
